Sarah Jones

Art Event
Online since 27 March 2014 18:49

For her fourth solo show at Anton Kern Gallery, British photographer Sarah Jones presents twenty-one new images from her "Cabinet", "Vitrine", "Rose Gardens", and "Horse" series. They are immersed in the deep black tone of highly saturated C-prints, many made from black-and-white negatives, and strike a distinct note between straight un-manipulated documents and profoundly emotive image inventions. Amelia Bauer + Elizabeth Parks Kibbey: Book of Shadows

Art Event
Online since 2 March 2014 18:33

De Soto Gallery is pleased to announce "Book of Shadows," an exhibition of photographs by Amelia Bauer created in collaboration with Elizabeth Parks Kibbey.

Amelia Bauer investigates cultural conceptions of the natural world through a lens of history and mythology. Her interventions, both photographic and sculptural, reflect on the distinctly American endeavor to bend nature to will and the psychological motivation underlying such efforts. The outcome is a nuanced marriage of the inherently untamable and the age-old human desire for control. Read more...

Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum Jelly
Polly Apfelbaum, John Burtle, Kirsten Nash, David Zuttermeister
March 8 – April 12, 2014

Often referred to as an optical aberration, a soft focus effect in photography can be created through the use of petroleum jelly. Smearing the messy substance on the lens diffuses the subject, producing a dreamlike representation. Although none of the artists in Petroleum Jelly produce lens-based media, they could be considered analog in their approach to image/object making. Read more...

Paul Edlin: Family Business

Art Event
Online since 5 February 2014 16:36

Reception: Thursday, February 6, 6 - 8 pm

This truth is that if it hadn't been for Paul Edlin (1931 - 2008), this gallery never would have existed.

When I first saw his postage stamp art in 1996 at Gordon College in Massachusetts I was deeply moved by the shimmering effect the room full of mosaic collages had on me. At the age of 65, it was Uncle Paul's first solo show. I knew he'd been making art for years but I didn't realize that for the last 15 years he had been almost exclusively using stamps to compose his paintings. Read more...

Omg: oh! Mardi Gras

Art Event
Online since 29 January 2014 00:11

The 4Art Gallery is proud to introduce a touch of New Orleans to Chicago this February. The gallery presents “Omg: oh! Mardi Gras.” In light of traditional Mardi Gras festivities, the exhibition highlights artists’ work of all media that will provoke “the wearing of the mask.” Finding their origin in ritual celebrations, the tradition of masks at Mardi Gras has a 300 year history in the Big Easy. The mask would offer an escape from daily life to the wearer in the early nineteenth-century. Today, the mask is a celebratory object for all. Read more...

Miller Updegraff

Art Event
Online since 3 January 2014 23:37

Clifton Benevento is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Los Angeles based artist Miller Updegraff.

The paintings and drawings in Updegraff's second solo show at Clifton Benevento continue to place emphasis on mining historical content – in this instance Berlin between the First and Second World Wars – and the ways in which it can be read. Although the content is from the past, the subject matter remains germane: decadence and debauchery, exploitation, persona, malaise and ennui. Read more...

Michael E. Smith

Art Event
Online since 29 October 2013 21:49

Typically mysterious, the prompt I receive, entitled 'Inspiration' to write the press release for Michael E. Smith's second show at Clifton Benevento gallery is puzzling to say the least. The terse content of the email is: "skull chips and laptops", which either illustrates or is illustrated by an iPhone quality image of a couple of classic Mac laptops mouse pads with round holes drilled into the mouse pad and white-bone looking objects, ostensibly the size of poker chips, inserted into the holes.
