James Cohan is pleased to present “A Través”, a group exhibition. As we travel from birth to death, the middle stage is our rite of passage (call it life) we collectively and individually pass through thresholds, periods of transitions, and states of indeterminacy. In this middle stage, there is the “cloud of unknowing”, a Romantic idea of a psychic space with no boundaries; freeing at once, but equally anxiety provoking. This exhibition is a meditation on this in-between-space.
In surrealist thinking, the “liminal has been seen as the threshold stage between waking and dream, or the conscious and subliminal state of awareness.” If ever there was a time when ambiguity and disorientation are shared sensations, it is now. Through performance, sculpture, painting and film, the artists presented in this exhibition offer glimpses into these subconscious states as they play out in figuration.
