Art Event: Summer Party - Celebrating the Tree

This July, Hauser & Wirth Somerset will host our Summer Party extravaganza, with this year’s event celebrating the tree. Taking inspiration from Subodh Gupta’s recently installed steel Banyan tree, the party will focus on the local woodland and landscape surrounding Durslade Farm as well as the rich natural history and folklore of Somerset.

The Summer weekend festivities will unite the gallery, restaurant and farm in a host of family-orientated activities, displays and competitions in true country fair tradition, from archery and falconry to helter skelters, face painting and rodeo bulls. In addition to our favourite classic fairground rides and country games, this year’s unique programme of events will centralise around the tree and it’s many agricultural, artistic and ecological uses.

Join us on Saturday from 6 pm with a diverse line-up of local musicians and live music playing throughout the evening, finishing with a celebratory firework display.

Celebrations continue on Sunday with the opportunity to take part in willow making and spoon carving workshops, wood turning demonstrations, story telling and leaf printing resulting in a collection of unique wishing cards placed on our very own wishing tree.

The gallery will work alongside local craftspeople and experienced bush craft practitioners to create a series of creative workshops and educational taster sessions that engage children and adults with their natural habitat and wild resources we are surrounded by every day. Explore the grounds at Durslade Farm like never before with woodland maps containing specialist knowledge as well as tales surrounding the history of trees in Britain and Somerset.

The Roth Bar & Grill will serve a seasonal BBQ feast throughout the day, all sourced from Durslade Farm, our Kitchen Garden and surrounding orchards, as well as local West Country food and drink stands, including Westcombe Dairy, Mendip Moments Ice Cream, Moo and Two and Little Jack Horners.

Martin Creed‘s solo exhibition, ‘What You Find’ will be open as normal throughout the day from 10 am – 5 pm. The Roth Bar & Grill will be taking reservations for lunch and dinner as well as al fresco dining, although booking in advance is essential due to high demand.

Bruton Museum is our chosen charity for the event, donations are welcome on the day.

Entry is free but we ask that everyone attending the celebrations to take part in our tree and nature-inspired fancy dress, the more adventurous and obscure the better!

We advise all local guests to walk to the gallery.

Please note, that as part of our Summer Party event, we will be having a 15 minute firework display at 10 pm on Saturday 2 July. This will be held in the field adjacent to the gallery on Dropping Lane, Bruton. We hope that advance notice allows you to ensure animals are kept safe and people are aware. We do hope that you are able to join us to celebrate the event!
