Cabrita – Serendipity

We are pleased to present new works by the Portuguese artist Pedro Cabrita Reis in a fourth solo exhibition.

Cabrita’s work encompasses a variety of media such as painting, photography, drawing, sculptures and installations. He often uses industrially produced objects that are combined with materials such as steel, wood, glass and aluminum. Through the complexity of the materials, observations and perception of object and material are closely linked to one another. Often the three-dimensional works take on architectonic dimensions, so that they move between the borders of architecture and spatial installation.

Cabrita’s works address space and its limits, evoke new connections and inspire fantasy with a power of association that is so suggestive that the works arouse the imagination and thus transcend the visual and extend into metaphorical dimensions. They are characterized by a look at the everyday world and at the same time a philosophical and poetic discourse.

The exhibition at the Mai 36 Galerie shows new works from various genres. In the installation “The Place of Wisdom” (2021), which shows a found object made of steel and a rug together, as in “Ecstacy” (2020), the artist combines and recycles a wall object made of steel elements and a broken ball – simple materials and objects in a constructive process and places them in a new context.

Pedro Cabrita Reis (born in 1956 in Lisbon, lives and works in Lisbon) completed his academic training in painting in 1983 at the 2020 at the Centre of Contemporary Art in Malaga and in 2019 in the Serralves Museum in Porto. In addition, he has participated in important international exhibitions such as Documenta IX in Kassel (1992), the 21st and 24th São Paulo Biennale (1998, 1994) and the Venice Biennale (2013, 2003 as Portugal’s representative, 1997). His works are represented in the most important collections such as the Tate Modern in London, the Kunstmuseum Winterthur, the Fundação Serralves, the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Oporto, the mumok in Vienna and the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin. Cabrita was invited by the Musée du Louvre to execute a sculpture for the Jardin des Tuileries, which may be seen starting in 2022.

Wir freuen uns, neue Werke des portugiesischen Künstlers Pedro Cabrita Reis in einer vierten Einzelausstellung zu präsentieren.

Cabritas Schaffen umfasst eine Vielzahl an Medien wie Malerei, Fotografie, Zeichnung, Skulpturen sowie Installationen. Oftmals verwendet er industriell gefertigte Objekte, die mit Materialien wie Stahl, Holz, Glas und Aluminium kombiniert werden. Durch die Komplexität der Materialien sind Betrachtung und Wahrnehmung von Objekt und Material eng miteinander verknüpft. Häufig nehmen die dreidimensionalen Werke dabei architektonische Dimensionen ein, sodass sie sich zwischen den Grenzen von Architektur und Rauminstallation bewegen.

Cabritas Werk thematisiert Räumlichkeit und ihre Grenzen, evoziert neue Zusammenhänge und weckt die Fantasie mit einer Assoziationskraft, die so suggestiv ist, dass die Werke die Vorstellungskraft anregen und damit über das Visuelle hinaus in metaphorische Dimensionen übergehen. Sie sind von einem Blick auf die alltägliche Welt und zugleich einem philosophischen und poetischen Diskurs geprägt.

Die Ausstellung in der Mai 36 Galerie zeigt neue Werke aus verschiedenen Gattungen. In der Installation “The Place of Wisdom” (2021), die ein Fundstück aus Stahl und einen Teppich miteinander zeigt, kombiniert und recycelt der Künstler wie in “Ecstacy” (2020) – einem Wandobjekt aus Stahlelementen und einem kaputten Ball – einfache Materialien und Objekte in einem konstruktiven Prozess und platziert diese in einem neuen Kontext.

Pedro Cabrita Reis (*1956 in Lissabon, lebt und arbeitet in Lissabon) absolvierte 1983 seine akademische Ausbildung in Malerei an der Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Lisboa und gilt als einer der international bekanntesten Künstler seiner Generation. Seine Werke werden international ausgestellt, zuletzt 2020 im Centre of Contemporary Art in Malaga und 2019 im Serralves Museum in Porto. Zudem nahm er an bedeutenden internationalen Ausstellungen wie der Documenta IX in Kassel (1992), der 21. und 24. São Paulo Biennale (1998, 1994) und der Biennale von Venedig (2013, 2003 als Vertreter Portugals, 1997) teil. Seine Werke sind in bedeutenden Sammlungen wie der Tate Modern in London, dem Kunstmuseum Winterthur, der Fundação Serralves, dem Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Oporto, dem mumok in Wien und der Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin vertreten. Cabrita wurde vom Musée du Louvre eingeladen eine Skulptur für die Jardin des Tuileries auszuführen, die ab 2022 zu sehen sein wird.
