CARAVAN 3/2020: Rachele Monti – Series of Exhibitions of Young Art

Starting from the two-dimensional medium of photography, Rachele Monti (b. 1990) creates immersive spatial installations. They are intimate worlds dominated by sensory impressions, featuring light projections, bright colours and dense surfaces, which Monti places in a tense relationship with one another in the space. Here the human body, a favourite pictorial theme of the reworked photographic image, assumes a central role.

In her artistic practice Rachele Monti engages with the non tangible, which she gives a concrete form in her works. The starting point for this is the human body, which she understands not only as an assemblage of skin, bones, muscles etc., but in the extended sense also as a vehicle for feelings and stories, for the unspoken and the unspeakable. The skin becomes a screen for the projection of the invisible, inner life.

In the 2016 work “Longeva struttura erosiva”, Monti papered the gallery with collaged photographs of naked body parts positioned on rocks and mountains, the boundaries between body and nature as well as inside and outside becoming fluid. In her installation “Impeto” (2019) Monti also treated the materials and pictures in such a way that they recalled skin-like surfaces. Even if the human body is not immediately recognized as a concrete subject of the pictures, the artist gives her works the properties of a body – with its own voice and skin.

Rachele Monti creates immersive spatial installations. She experiments with the technical possibilities of the photographic medium and often extends her results with the use of light, colour and mostly transparent materials on to which she prints or projects her digital images. She changes the photographic originals with gestures that are sometimes improvised, sometimes controlled and repeated, adding new levels. This method also deliberately leaves room for random and unpredictable changes. Furthermore, this process gives rise not only to new photographs, but also coloured prints on fabric or PVC, wallpaper, light projections, which Monti combines and arbitrarily overlaps.

Most of Monti’s previous works are informed by an introspective gaze, which places the inner life, the hidden and the intimate in the foreground. For her CARAVAN exhibition the artist extends this perspective into the outside world, incorporating non-verbal interactions or invisible connections. As visitors we are immersed in a world dominated by sensory impressions, in which we now reflect not only what is happening within us, but also what is going on around us, in our immediate environment.

The CARAVAN series of exhibitions offers visitors to the Aargauer Kunsthaus surprising encounters with young art from all over Switzerland and the opportunity to discover positions that have not yet become established. In the course of the year three solo exhibitions may be found in the form of ‘mobile interventions’ at different places in the Museum; artists are invited to place their works in a dialogue with the building, the collection or the programme of the Kunsthaus.

Ausgehend vom zweidimensionalen Medium der Fotografie kreiert Rachele Monti (*1990) immersive Rauminstallationen. Es sind intime, von Sinneseindrücken dominierte Welten mit Lichtprojektionen, leuchtenden Farben und dichten Oberflächen, die Monti im Raum in ein Spannungsverhältnis setzt. Eine zentrale Rolle nimmt darin der menschliche Körper ein, der ein beliebtes Bildmotiv der überarbeiteten fotografischen Aufnahmen ist.

In ihrer künstlerischen Praxis setzt sich Rachele Monti mit dem Nicht-Fassbaren auseinander, dem sie in ihren Arbeiten eine konkrete Form gibt. Ausgangslage dafür ist der menschliche Körper, den sie nicht nur als Zusammensetzung von Haut, Knochen, Muskeln u.a. versteht, sondern im übertragenen Sinne auch als Hülle für Gefühle, Geschichten sowie Unausgesprochenes und Unaussprechbares. Die Haut wird dabei eine Projektionsfläche für das unsichtbare, innere Leben.

Bereits in der Arbeit “Longeva struttura erosiva” von 2016 tapezierte Monti den Ausstellungsraum mit collagierten Fotografien von nackten, auf Felsen und Bergen positionierten Körperteilen, wobei die Grenzen zwischen Körper und Natur sowie Innen und Aussen fliessend wurden. Auch in ihrer Installation “Impeto” (2019) bearbeitete Monti die Materialien und Bilder so, dass sie an hautähnliche Oberflächen erinnerten. Selbst wenn der menschliche Körper nicht immer sofort als konkretes Bildmotiv erkennbar ist, verleiht die Künstlerin ihren Werken die Eigenschaften eines Körpers – mit eigener Stimme und Haut.

Rachele Monti schafft immersive Rauminstallationen. Sie experimentiert mit den technischen Möglichkeiten des fotografischen Mediums und erweitert ihre Resultate mit dem Einsatz von Licht, Farbe und meist durchsichtigen Materialien, auf die sie ihre digitalen Bilder druckt oder projiziert. Mal mit improvisierten, mal mit kontrollierten, sich wiederholenden Gesten verändert sie die fotografischen Originale und fügt damit neue Ebenen hinzu. Diese Arbeitsweise lässt auch bewusst Raum für zufällige und unvorhersehbare Veränderungen. Es entstehen so nicht nur neue Fotografien, sondern auch Farbdrucke auf Stoff oder PVC, Wandtapeten, Lichtprojektionen, die Monti zusammen kombiniert und beliebig überlappt.

Die meisten vergangenen Projekte Montis sind von einem introspektiven Blick geprägt, der das Innenleben, Verborgene und Intime in den Vordergrund stellt. Für ihre CARAVAN-Ausstellung weitet die Künstlerin diese Perspektive erstmals auf die Aussenwelt aus, indem sie die nonverbalen Interaktionen oder die unsichtbaren Zusammenhänge miteinbezieht. Als Besuchende tauchen wir in eine von Sinneseindrücken dominierte Welt ein, in der wir nicht mehr nur reflektieren, was in uns geschieht, sondern auch was um uns herum – in unserer unmittelbaren Umgebung – stattfindet.

CARAVAN-Ausstellungsreihe für junge Kunst
Die CARAVAN-Ausstellungsreihe bietet dem Publikum des Aargauer Kunsthauses überraschende Begegnungen mit junger Kunst aus der ganzen Schweiz und die Gelegenheit, noch nicht etablierte Positionen zu entdecken. Im Laufe des Jahres sind drei Einzelausstellungen in Form “mobiler Interventionen” an unterschiedlichen Orten im Haus anzutreffen, wobei die Kunstschaffenden eingeladen sind, ihre Werke in einen Dialog mit dem Gebäude, der Sammlung oder dem Programm des Kunsthauses zu bringen.
