Carlos Aires – Sweet dreams (are made of this)

In his second solo exhibition at Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art Vienna Carlos Aires confronts the viewer with shocking images of catastrophes, wars and violence, everyday icons and attributes of a capitalist society. Dazzled by the shining light of the banknotes and the gleaming gold, the complexity of Carlos Aires’ works is often only revealed upon second glance. This is also true, for example, in the exhibition’s eponymous work “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”, in which the artist cuts the text of the 1983 Eurythmics classic out of banknotes from the 20 strongest financial markets and poses the question whether our dreams are made of money. The letters and flies made of laser cut banknotes and fastened with gold pins call to mind entomological preparations and underscore our mortality. Aires explains the vanitas motif as follows: “Love is in the Air” deals with the dark side of our daily melodrama: the same finger that switches off the computer screen on which you have just watched horrible images of a war, afterwards rings the bell of a private nightclub.”

Baroque abundance is also present in the new work series “RETABLO” as Aires collages densely interwoven pin-up girls and engraves the erotic ‘horror vacui’ onto gold leaf, whereby the holy golden iconostasis (utopos) is imbued with purchasable love. The four golden devotional images of violence are flanked by a wallpaper made of banknote portraits. In the center of the cluster of the personified money the golden arms and legs of the crucified Christ are recognizable. The “Trompe l’oeil Jesus” becomes the golden lamb of capitalism which we idolize and worship, while elsewhere in “the name of God” wars are fought, to which the black-painted Christ statue with baton alludes.

The highpoint of the work series “Disaster” – everyday images of violence and terror that have been extracted from the daily press and television and interwoven with the banknotes from the countries where the “Disaster” (demonstration, war, riot) occurred – manifests itself in the final “cabinet of wonder”. As in the baroque cabinet of curiosities, Aires joins together different work series and allows the viewer to become aware of the tragic banality of the “Disaster”, money pieces (“Your Money Stinks Like Mine Does”), camouflage works (“Fair People / Fear People”) and black antlers.

In seiner zweiten Personale bei Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art Vienna konfrontiert Carlos Aires den Betrachter mit schockierenden Bildern von Katastrophen, Kriegen und Gewalt, Ikonen des Alltags und Attributen einer kapitalistisch orientierten Gesellschaft. Geblendet vom schimmernden Licht der Geldscheine und des gleißenden Goldes, offenbart sich die Vielschichtigkeit der Werke von Carlos Aires häufig erst im zweiten Blick – so z.B. auch in der Titel gebenden Arbeit “Sweet Dreams (are made of this”, in welcher der Künstler aus den Geldscheinen der stärksten Finanzmärkte den Text des Eurythmics Klassikers aus dem Jahre 1983 schneidet und die Frage aufwirft, ob unsere Träume aus Geld bestünden. Die von Goldnadeln aufgepinnten Letter und Fliegen aus lasergecutteten Banknoten erinnern an entomologische Präparate und unterstreichen unsere Vergänglichkeit. Aires äußerte sich über das Vanitasmotiv in seinem Werk wie folgt: “Love is in the Air” deals with the dark side of our daily melodrama: the same finger that switches off the computer screen on which you have just watched horrible images of a war, afterwards rings the bell of a private nightclub.”

Barocke Üppigkeit greift auch in der neuen Werkserie “RETABLO” Platz, wenn Aires Pin-Up-Girls dicht verwoben miteinander collagiert und den ‘horror vacui’ der Erotik auf Blattgold graviert, womit der heilige goldene Ikonengrund (utopos) von käuflicher Liebe erfüllt wird. Die fünf goldenen Andachtsbilder der Gewalt werden von einer Wandtapete, die aus Banknoten-Portraits besteht, flankiert. Im Zentrum der Ansammlung des personifizierten Geldes sind die goldenen Arme und Beine des gekreuzigten Christus zu erkennen. Der “Trompe l’oeil Jesus” wird zum goldenen Lamm des Kapitalismus, welches wir anbeten und verehren, während anderswo im “Namen Gottes” Kriege gefochten werden, worauf die schwarz lackierte Christus-Statue mit Schlagstock hinweist. Den Höhepunkt der Werkserie “Disaster” – alltägliche Bilder der Gewalt und des Terrors, die der Tagespresse und dem Fernsehen entnommen und mit den Geldscheinen der jeweiligen Länder, wo das “Disaster” (Demonstrationen, Kriege, Aufstände) stattfand, verwoben wurden – manifestiert sich in der abschließenden “Wunderkammer”. Ganz im Sinne des barocken Kuriositätenkabinetts vereint Aires verschiedene Werkserien miteinander und lässt die tragische Alltäglichkeit der “Disaster”, Money pieces (“Yor Money Stinks Like Mine Does”), Camouflage Werke (“Fair People / Fear People”) und schwarzen Geweihe dem Betrachter bewusst werden.
