Chen Ruo Bing – Defined Spaces in Ambiguous Worlds

We know the works by James Turrell that are created of nothing but light, they can only be seen and experienced in their dark spaces. Looking at the paintings by Chen Ruo Bing creates a Turrell-like experience. They are painted on canvas, the paints consist of pigments, and they are presented in bright, indeed illuminated spaces. This is completely different from Turrell, and yet: the longer we look at them, the more the colours seem to move and expand, the flat pictorial plane becomes a space, and suddenly we feel as we do in front of a “picture” by James Turrell – we seem to be in an immaterial space of light.

But Chen Ruo Bing does not stop there, he adds the line to the plane, and the painting becomes dialectical. Plane and space on the one side, line and limitation on the other. In infinity, nothing can be made out, only the line provides orientation, it grounds the works, and turns the immaterial into an object in the world.

His paintings are based on line and plane. The line’s purpose is not to construct a space; rather, it limits the infinite, indeterminate extension of the light, it defines a section of space or an additional space within an existing colour space. Without the line, there is no recognition, without the line there is infinity – Chen Ruo Bing’s paintings call attention to this.

Chen Ruo Bing (born in 1970 in China) studied at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, and with Gotthard Graubner at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He has received numerous prizes and fellowships, including residencies from the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation (2000) and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung (2014). In recent years, he had solo exhibitions at Kunstmuseum Bochum (2016) and the Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art, Gwangju (2013). As a representative of China’s abstract art, he has been shown numerous times in museums in China and Germany. Chen Ruo Bing lives and works in Düsseldorf.

Wir kennen die aus nichts anderem als Licht geschaffenen Bilder von James Turrell, sie lassen sich nur in ihren dunklen Räumen sehen und erleben. Ein Turrell ähnliches Erleben hat man beim Betrachten der Bilder von Chen Ruo Bing. Sie sind auf Leinwand gemalt, die Farben bestehen aus Pigmenten und sie werden im hellen, ja in beleuchteten Räumen präsentiert. Es ist völlig anders als bei James Turrell.

Dennoch: Je länger man hinschaut, desto mehr scheint sich die Farbe zu bewegen und auszudehnen, die flache Bildfläche wird ein Raum und plötzlich fühlt man sich wie vor einem “Bild” von James Turrell – im immateriellen Lichtraum.

Aber Chen Ruo Bing bleibt da nicht stehen, zur Fläche kommt die Linie, das Bild wird dialektisch. Fläche und Raum auf der einen Seite, Linie und Begrenzung auf der anderen. In der Unbegrenztheit lässt sich nichts erkennen, nur die Linie gibt Orientierung, sie erdet, sie macht das Immaterielle zu einem Ding in der Welt.

Seine Bilder beruhen auf Linie und Fläche. Die Linie ist nicht dazu da, einen Raum zu konstruieren, sie setzt vielmehr der unendlichen, unbestimmten Ausdehnung des Lichts Grenzen, sie definiert einen Raumausschnitt oder einen weiteren Raum innerhalb eines vorhanden Farbraums. Ohne die Linie kein Erkennen, ohne die Linie Unendlichkeit – Chen Ruo Bings Bilder machen uns darauf aufmerksam.

Chen Ruo Bing (*1970 China) studierte an der Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, Hangzhou und bei Gotthard Graubner an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Er erhielt Preise und Förderungen, u.a. das Aufenthaltsstipendium der Josef und Anni Albers Foundation (2000) und der Heinrich Böll Stiftung (2014). In den letzten Jahren hatte er Einzelausstellungen im Kunstmuseum Bochum (2016) und im Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art, Gwangju (2013). Als ein Vertreter der abstrakten Kunst Chinas wurden er vielfach in Deutschland und China in Museen gezeigt. Chen Ruo Bing lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf.
