City of Zurich Work and Studio Grants 2016

The annual Work and Studio Grants exhibition at Helmhaus Zürich provides a regular snapshot of the local art scene. This is where the themes, trends and theories of today’s artists are showcased. Particularly striking this year is the way the 42 artists and artist duos engage with the highly charged dichotomies between technology and craftsmanship, digital and analogue, man and machine, individual and society, public and private, as well as between memory and presence. Art seeks out and actively takes a stance on such polar opposites. The exhibition also invites visitors to take a critical interest in the decisions made by the jury.

Each year, artists in the city of Zurich have the opportunity of applying for a work grant or a studio residency abroad. Eligible applicants must have been resident in the city of Zurich for at least two years. There is no age limit.

The application process consists of two stages. In the first round of adjudication, the jury draws up a shortlist based on the documentation and portfolios submitted by the applicants. The shortlisted applicants are then invited to take part in the second round of adjudication by presenting original works at Helmhaus Zürich. This year’s jury comprises members of the Fine Arts Commission and two guest adjudicators who petition the Department of Culture to apportion the grants on the basis of these original works. The exhibition at Helmhaus Zürich presents the works of the shortlisted candidates.

This year’s study grant amounts to CHF 18,000 for each artist. The allocation of a studio includes a monetary grant towards living costs abroad. In addition, an art mediation grant in the amount of CHF 18,000 is also awarded in recognition of the important role that authoritative and innovative presentation of contemporary and emerging art plays in promoting and supporting the arts and culture.

Werk- und Atelierstipendien der Stadt Zürich 2016

Nach dem internationalen Gastspiel “Manifesta 11” widmet sich das Helmhaus Zürich wieder der Zürcher Kunstszene: Das Ressort Bildende Kunst der Stadt Zürich zeigt im Helmhaus die Werke von 42 KünstlerInnen und Künstlerduos, die im Rahmen der Kunstförderung von Stadt Zürich Kultur für ein Geldstipendium oder einen Atelieraufenthalt vorgeschlagen worden sind. Während die Kunst bis in die Limmat reicht, werden im Begleitprogramm zur Ausstellung Freud und Leid des Jurierens oder die Zukunft der Popmusik verhandelt.

Auf die jährliche Stipendienausschreibung durch Stadt Zürich Kultur haben dieses Jahr für die erste Runde 194 Künstlerinnen und Künstler ein Gesuch eingereicht. Neben Werkstipendien wurden Atelieraufenthalte in Paris, Genua, Kunming, New York, Istanbul und Kairo ausgeschrieben. Aus den eingereichten Dossiers hat die Jury dieses Jahr die vergleichsweise hohe Anzahl von 42 Positionen ausgewählt, die zu einem umfassenden Überblick über die Zürcher Kunstszene im Helmhaus zusammenkommen. Eingerichtet wird die Ausstellung dieses Jahr von Luigi Archetti und Marcel van Eeden, beide Mitglieder der Kommission für Bildende Kunst der Stadt Zürich.

Als externe Jurygäste wirkten für diese Ausgabe der Künstler Tue Greenfort und die Künstlerin Hannah Weinberger mit. Der Stipendienjury gehörten zudem die Mitglieder der Kommission für Bildende Kunst der Stadt Zürich Dominique Lämmli (Künstlerin und Professorin ZHdK), Pablo Müller (Kunsthistoriker und Kunstkritiker), Sabine Rusterholz Petko (Kunsthistorikerin und Kuratorin) und Sabine Schaschl (Direktorin Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zürich) an.

Unter dem Titel “Lieblinge der Herzen” tragen die OrganisatorInnen dieses Jahr im Veranstaltungsprogramm den Werken Rechnung, die das Publikum besonders ansprechen: Barbara Basting (Ressortleitung Bildende Kunst der Stadt Zürich) bespricht die Arbeiten mit den KünstlerInnen und dem Jurymitglied Sabine Rusterholz Petko (10. November 2016, 18.30 Uhr). In der Helmhaus-Veranstaltungsreihe “Willkommen in der Problemzone!” macht in diesem Fall Jurieren weh: Barbara Basting verhandelt am 3. November 2016 um 18.30 Uhr mit dem Kommissionsmitglied Pablo Müller Freud und Leid der Juryarbeit. Während in der 5-Uhr-These vom 16. November 2016 mit Gilles Fontolliet ein Künstler zu Wort kommt, der sich für ein Buchprojekt mit vielen KünstlerkollegInnen ausgetauscht hat (“Fragile KünstlerInnen verpacken ihre Werke besonders gut”), hat Helmhaus-Kurator Daniel Morgenthaler für die zweite These eine Politikerin eingeladen: GLP-Gemeinderätin Ann-Catherine Nabholz macht sich am 19. Oktober 2016 um 17 Uhr Gedanken zur Frage, inwiefern Kunstförderung immer auch Forderung ist. Führungen durch die Ausstellung für Erwachsene und Kinder mit den Kunstvermittlerinnen Kristina Gersbach und Andrea Huber runden das Vermittlungs- und Veranstaltungsangebot ab.

In der Reihe “Musik in der Ausstellung” kommen mit Fabian Sigismund – auch bekannt als Fai Baba – und Domi Chansorn am 25. Oktober 2016 zwei der grössten Talente der Zürcher Musikszene zusammen. Und mit dem “Futur Arrrt Pop” von JPTR wird gar die Zukunft des Pop verhandelt (8. November 2016, 20.30 Uhr).
