Claudia Comte – Black and White Circles in the Sky

Claudia Comte (*1983) who comes from Grancy (VD) and now lives in Berlin is well known for her expansive installations and interventions in the public space. In her works, she takes up architectural forms and graphic patterns. She additionally likes to ask those viewing her works to touch, use, or otherwise interact with them. Comte’s art also frequently has a functional dimension to it. She does not view her work as embodying secret special knowledge but deliberately integrates her art in everyday life. “I endeavour to mix as many different media and techniques as possible”, says the artist, “so as to create a total installation in this way.”

At the invitation of the City of Zurich’s “Art in Public Spaces” working group (AG KiöR), Claudia Comte has developed a two-part intervention especially for the Münsterhof that can only be experienced from mid-August to mid-September. It is called “Black and White Circles in The Sky” and comprises four large-size sun sails and a big seat. The triangular sails depict fragments of circular patterns and reflect the artistic cobblestone designs of the Münsterhof. In this way, the artist heightens the awareness of passers-by, highlighting an aspect of urban development that generally attracts little attention when people enter this mediaeval square. Yet the sun sails, which are only in black and white, serve a specific function too. They create shade and – like the “Big Seat” (Comte) – invite people to spend time on the Münsterhof. In the heart of the bustling city of Zurich, a special island comes into being where people can relax at their leisure.

“Black and White Circles in The Sky” by Claudia Comte was created as a pilot project by the AG KiöR as part of the Zurich City Council’s utilisation concept for the Münsterhof cultural location.

Die aus Grancy (VD) stammende und in Berlin lebende Künstlerin Claudia Comte (*1983) ist bekannt geworden mit raumgreifenden Installationen und Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum. Sie befasst sich in ihrem Œuvre mit architektonischen Formen und grafischen Mustern. Sie fordert das Publikum auch gerne dazu auf, die Kunstwerke anzufassen, zu benutzen oder auf sonst eine Art damit zu interagieren. Die Kunst von Comte weist häufig auch eine funktionale Dimension auf. Sie versteht ihre Tätigkeit nicht als geheimes Spezialwissen, sondern integriert ihre Kunst mit Absicht in den Alltag. “Ich versuche möglichst viele Medien und Techniken zu mischen”, sagt die Künstlerin, “um damit eine Total-Installation zu schaffen.”

Auf Einladung der Arbeitsgruppe Kunst im öffentlichen Raum (AG KiöR) der Stadt Zürich hat Claudia Comte speziell für den Münsterhof eine zweiteilige Intervention entwickelt, die nur von Mitte August bis Mitte September zu erleben ist. Sie heisst “Black and White Circles in The Sky” und besteht aus vier grossformatigen Sonnensegeln und einem riesigen Sitzmöbel. Die dreieckig geschnittenen Segel zeigen Fragmente von kreisförmigen Mustern und nehmen die kunstvolle Pflasterung des Münsterhofs auf. Damit sensibilisiert die Künstlerin die Passanten für einen städtebaulichen Aspekt, der beim Beschreiten des mittelalterlichen Platzes meist wenig beachtet wird. Anderseits haben die schwarz-weiss gehaltenen Sonnensegel auch eine Funktion: Sie spenden Schatten und laden – wie der “Big Seat” (Comte) – zum Verweilen auf dem Münsterhof ein. Im Herzen des umtriebigen Zürichs entsteht so eine besondere Insel der Musse.

“Black and White Circles in The Sky” von Claudia Comte entstand als Pilotprojekt der AG KiöR im Rahmen des Nutzungskonzepts des Stadtrat Zürich für den Kulturplatz Münsterhof.
