Crush – Kilian Rüthemann presents PARKETT-Editions

“Crush” is an extraordinary presentation of selected Parkett Editions installed by Kilian Rüthemann in Parkett’s Exhibition Space in Zurich.

The artist has laid out over ten tons of turquoise-colored, crushed glass on the floor of the gallery. Within this Arctic landscape, he has erected columns of large glass chunks for the presentation of the Editions. The installation is an invitation to discover the latest Parkett Editions in tandem with a selection of earlier ones – and also an invitation to enjoy the unusual synesthetic, sensurround experience of hearing the glass crunch underfoot, feeling the unevenness and seeing the beautifully subtle variations in color.

The title “Crush” not only conjures the sound of crunching glass, but also the joys of falling in love. This is mirrored in Kilian Rüthemann’s choice of editions on view in his dramatic and exciting presentation.

Kilian Rüthemann is known for architectural and spatial interventions that make the physical properties of the materials around us visible and tangible. His exhibitions at the Basel Museum of Contemporary Art (“Attacca,” 2010) and at Haus Konstruktiv Zürich (“Room for Milk,” 2012) met with critical acclaim. He was born in 1979 and lives in Basel.

“Crush” zeigt eine aussergewöhnliche Präsentation einzelner Parkett-Editionen, die Kilian Rüthemann im Zürcher Parkett-Ausstellungsraum eingerichtet hat.

Der Künstler hat über zehn Tonnen türkisfarbiger Glaskies auf dem Boden des Raumes ausgebreitet. Aus dieser an Eisschollen erinnernden Landschaft ragen Sockel empor, die für die Präsentation der Editionen mit grossen Glasbrocken aufgetürmt wurden. Die Inszenierung ist zugleich eine Einladung, die neusten und eine Auswahl älterer Parkett-Editionen zu entdecken, und sich dabei einem synästhetischen, sensurround Erlebnis hinzugeben: Das Knirschen beim Gehen auf dem Glaskies vermischt sich mit der Wahrnehmung der feinen unterschiedlichen Farbtöne des Glases.

Kilian Rüthemann, geboren 1979, in Basel lebend, hat sich einen Namen gemacht mit architektonisch-räumlichen Interventionen, welche die physische Beschaffenheit der uns umgebenden Materialien sicht- und spürbar machen. Bekannt sind u.a. seine Ausstellungen im Museum für Gegenwartskunst Basel (“Attacca”, 2010) und im Haus Konstruktiv Zürich (“Room for Milk”, 2012).

Rüthemanns Ausstellungstitel “Crush” spielt nicht nur lautmalerisch an den “Sound” an, sondern nimmt auch Bezug auf das englische “Schwärmen” oder “Verliebtsein”: In Kilian Rüthemanns spezifischer Auswahl der Editionen kommt somit seine Sympathie gegenüber gewissen Werken und Künstlern zum Ausdruck, die er nun in einer aufsehenerregenden Präsentation vorstellt.
