P·P·O·W is pleased to present “Opening”, Dana DeGiulio’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. In “Opening”, DeGiulio presents 80 perceptual paintings made at home next to the window as an iterative project that began in 2013. The object of attention of each is a bunch of cheap dead roses at rest on the radiator.
DeGiulio offers:
Gender, genre, flails, flies, or falls apart or wanders off; there’s a gulf between a body and its representation and its will to represent, its ability to determine and record edges. It is a decision to use the act of painting to stage a negotiation between figure and ground every day, as recuperation of and rehearsal for being in the world outside. How things feel if not are. What can be done. Painting posited as a container into which you can pour thanksgiving, anger, boredom, mostly dancing alone like what moves through could be held still and through that extend. Things that should have stayed gone, unheld, are held still here, formed into something you can name, gulfs away. Apprehension of a painting requires any body, we’re all equal in the world. They need you. The viewer is the predicate.

Dana DeGiulio (b. 1978) is a painter who works at home in Brooklyn. Her work in video, drawing, installation, painting, writing, and teaching is about edges and touch and attention, and tries to ask the means what the ends are. DeGiulio earned a BFA in 2001 and MFA in 2007 from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2022, DeGiulio presented Live or Die, a one-person exhibition at the Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery, Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT. DeGiulio is an Adjunct Professor of Visual Arts at New York University, New York, NY; Columbia University, New York, NY; and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL. She is the co-founder (with Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, Colby Shaft, Diego Leclery, and Hans-Peter Sundquist) of the artist-run gallery Julius Caesar in Chicago, IL.
