David Shrobe - Homegrown

Thierry Goldberg Gallery is pleased to present “Homegrown”, David Shrobe’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.

New York native David Shrobe creates systems of interwoven elements out of various materials reclaimed from environments he encounters, like the streets around his familial home in central Harlem, as well as uninhabited islands off the coast of Florida.

Shrobe is interested in the ecology of things and their relations and interactions with their surroundings. He manipulates the familiar, appropriating imagery from multiple sources to create works that embrace, drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and architecture simultaneously.

What results is a cross-pollination of artistic acts made from accumulations of domestic items, including mirror frames, tiles, clocks, doors, and doorknobs, to name only a few. The detritus of the everyday is recontextualized; transcending its original purpose while transforming its preexisting form.

Shrobe investigates what it means to be a local, indigenous inhabitant, challenging assumptions about notions of a singular historical narrative, by cutting, rubbing out, and then piecing together meaning from the objects and images he recovers.

David Shrobe lives and works in New York, he holds an MFA and a BFA in painting from Hunter College. He has most recently had a solo exhibition at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum in Harlem, as well as a solo show at Russ Berrie Pavilion in New York. He has also exhibited at bitforms Gallery, RFA Gallery, FiveMyles, and Rush Arts Gallery, among others. He has participated in the 2014 Skowhegan residency program and was selected to join the Bronx Museum’s 2017 AIM program.
