Etel Adnan – La joie de vivre

Museum Haus Konstruktiv is the first Swiss institution to present a solo exhibition on the artist Etel Adnan (b. 1925 in Beirut), who was one of the major discoveries at dOCUMENTA (13). Adnan has won over the artworld with her small-format paintings, tapestries, fold-out books, and Super-8 films. However, she initially became famous as a writer, poet, and cultural editor. Her most important publications include the novel “Sitt Marie Rose” (1977), for which she received the “Prix de l’amitié franco-arabe”, the book of poetry “Arab Apocalypse” (1980) and the artist’s book “Journey to Mount Tamalpais” (1986). Her first paintings were produced at the end of the 1950s in the USA, where she worked as a lecturer, having studied philosophy at the Sorbonne, in Berkeley, and at Harvard.

Her first paintings, conceived in a mostly concretist manner, whereby the artist juxtaposes rectangular forms or lets them float on color fields, are followed by landscape abstractions from the 1980s onward. The paintings from this period are characterized by the Californian landscape north of San Francisco, especially Mount Tamalpais, near which Adnan found her home. Her obsessive preoccupation with this mountain, with all its weather-dependent phenomena of light and color, which she spent over thirty-five years studying, day and night, and translating into painting, invites comparisons with Paul Cézanne, who repeatedly chose Montagne Sainte-Victoire in Southern France as his motif. Sometimes a mountainous form, a horizon, or a hilly landscape can still be made out in Adnan’s paintings, but they quickly lose their representational legibility and instead bring to life an atmospheric element that is captured by painting or drawing. For Adnan, it is not about depicting what is seen, but about the emotion pertaining to what is perceived.

Adnan’s paintings know no hierarchy between primary and mixed colors; their coloring is rich and radiant. The paint, applied with a palette knife in clearly defined fields, adheres to visual arrangements that appear almost architectural, demonstrating a formal relationship with those of Nicolas de Staël (1914-1955). In an interview with Sabine Schaschl, the artist explains her approach: “When I apply a color, this color has its own intensity, but it also has a form. It must have a form. There’s no getting around that. And this determines the next step. (!) It’s about constantly establishing a new balance between color and meaning.”

Etel Adnan’s paintings are produced in a single painting process, without interruption and without subsequent corrections. The artist compares her paintings’ small format with the writing of poems: “Poems are small and compact. And my paintings on canvas are exactly the same. (!) Essentially, they are visual poems.”

In her fold-out books, which Etel Adnan has been developing since 1964, drawing, poetry and the writing process itself directly intertwine. When folded together, they are intimate little books. When folded out at full length, they become spatial objects.

With over fifty paintings from all periods of her work, as well as selected tapestries, folding screens, fold-out books, and a Super-8 film, the exhibition at Museum Haus Konstruktiv provides an overview of Etel Adnan’s diverse forms of artistic expression. The artist has decided to call this exhibition “La joie de vivre”, the joy of living, thus emphasizing the statement-like nature of her art: as a decision in favor of life itself.

This exhibition is accompanied by a catalog (in German/English), published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, with Etel Adnan’s latest poems and an interview that Sabine Schaschl has conducted with the artist in Paris.

Als erste Schweizer Institution präsentiert das Museum Haus Konstruktiv eine Einzelausstellung der 1925 in Beirut geborenen Künstlerin Etel Adnan, die zu den grossen Entdeckungen der dOCUMENTA (13) zählt. Adnan hat mit ihren kleinformatigen Malereien, Tapisserien, Faltbüchern und Super-8-Filmen die Kunstwelt erobert. Bekannt wurde sie zunächst jedoch als Schriftstellerin, Dichterin und Kulturredakteurin. Zu ihren wichtigsten Publikationen zählen der Roman “Sitt Marie Rose” (1977), für den sie den “Prix de l’amitié franco-arabe” erhielt, der Gedichtband “Arabische Apokalypse” (1980) und das Künstlerbuch “Reise zum Mount Tamalpais” (1986). Ihre ersten Malereien entstanden Ende der 1950er Jahre in den USA, wo sie nach ihrem Philosophie-Studium (an der Sorbonne, in Berkeley und in Harvard) als Dozentin tätig war.

Nach ersten, meist konkret konzipierten Bildern, in denen die Künstlerin rechteckige Formen nebeneinandersetzt oder auf Farbflächen schweben lässt, entstehen ab den 1980er Jahren Abstraktionen von Landschaften. Die kalifornische Landschaft nördlich von San Francisco und insbesondere der Mount Tamalpais, in dessen Nähe Adnan ihr Domizil gefunden hat, prägen die Bilder dieser Zeit. Ihre obsessive Beschäftigung mit diesem Berg, den sie über 35 Jahre lang in all seinen wetterbedingten Licht- und Farberscheinungen zu Tag- und Nachtzeiten studiert und in Malerei übersetzt hat, lädt zu Vergleichen mit Paul Cézanne ein, der immer wieder die Montagne Sainte-Victoire in Südfrankreich als Motiv wählte. Manchmal kann man in Adnans Malereien noch eine Bergform, einen Horizont oder eine Hügellandschaft ausmachen, schnell aber verlieren sie ihre gegenständliche Lesbarkeit und lassen vielmehr ein in Malerei oder Zeichnung festgehaltenes Stimmungsmoment lebendig werden. Für Adnan geht es nicht um die Abbildung des Gesehenen, sondern um die Emotion gegenüber dem Wahrgenommenen.

Adnans Malerei kennt keine Hierarchie zwischen Primär- und Mischfarben; ihr Kolorit ist reich und leuchtend. Die mit einem Spachtel aufgetragene Farbe fügt sich in klar konturierten Flächen zu beinahe architektonisch anmutenden Bildordnungen, die denen von Nicolas de Staël (1914–1955) formal verwandt sind. Zu ihrer Vorgehensweise erklärte die Künstlerin in einem Gespräch mit Sabine Schaschl: “Wenn ich eine Farbe auftrage, dann hat diese Farbe ihre eigene Intensität, doch sie hat auch eine Form. Sie muss eine Form haben. Man kommt nicht darum herum. Und das bedingt den nächsten Schritt. (!) Es geht darum, stets ein neues Gleichgewicht zwischen Farbe und Bedeutung herzustellen.”

Etel Adnans Bilder entstehen in einem Malvorgang, ohne Unterbrechung und ohne nachträgliche Korrekturen. Das kleine Format ihrer Gemälde vergleicht die Künstlerin mit dem Schreiben von Gedichten: “Gedichte sind klein und kompakt. Und meine Leinwandbilder sind genauso. (!) Im Grunde genommen sind sie visuelle Gedichte.”

In ihren Faltbüchern, die Etel Adnan seit 1964 entwickelt, greifen Zeichnung, Dichtung und der Prozess des Schreibens selbst unmittelbar ineinander. Zusammengefaltet, sind diese Leporellos kleine, intime Bücher. In voller Länge ausgefaltet, werden sie zu Raumobjekten.

Die Ausstellung im Museum Haus Konstruktiv gibt mit über 50 Malereien aus allen Schaffensperioden, mit ausgewählte Tapisserien, Paravents, Faltbüchern sowie einem Super-8-Film einen Überblick über die Vielfalt der künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen Etel Adnans. Die Künstlerin entschied sich für den Ausstellungstitel “La joie de vivre”, die Freude am Leben, und betont damit den Statement-Charakter ihrer Kunst: als Entscheidung für das Leben an sich.

Zur Ausstellung erscheint im Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König ein Katalog (deutsch/englisch), mit jüngsten Gedichten von Etel Adnan und einem Interview, das Sabine Schaschl mit der Künstlerin in Paris geführt hat.
