Giacomo Santiago Rogado – All that you see

For the first time in the history of the Kunstmuseum Thun, an artist will be showing work simultaneously at both the Thunerhof and the Thun-Panorama. His first survey exhibition “Giacomo Santiago Rogado: All that you see” and the expansive installation “Giacomo Santiago Rogado: Out of Sight” in Schadaupark demonstrate how the Swiss artist’s work has changed over the decades: from figurative to abstract painting – and beyond.

Illusion, intuition, inspiration and transformation are catchwords that are often applied to Giacomo Santiago Rogado’s work. And he also uses them himself to describe a process-oriented practice that, intriguingly, leaves a great deal to chance. Viewers might also think of such terms when they discover that his work delivers not definitive truths but rather food for their own thoughts. For over 20 years, Giacomo Santiago Rogado, who has been honoured with prestigious prizes such as the Swiss Art Award (2007), the Manor Cultural Prize of Central Switzerland (2009) and the Recognition Prize of the City of Lucerne (2013), has been fascinating the public with his paintings. They draw the eye deep into a picture space with no evident boundaries, thus opening up an infinite expanse.

Giacomo Santiago Rogado is known for arresting compositions that betray an thorough exploration of colour and form. Continually embarking on new paths as an artist and researcher, he playfully probes the limitations and conditions of contemporary painting in ways that are sometimes quite spectacular. Viewers have the opportunity to experience a low-threshold introduction to Rogado’s astonishing creative power and joy in experimentation by contemplating the juxtaposition of a work such as “Bellevue” with the walk-in installation “Growing together through emotions over time”. Not only the route from figurative to abstract painting becomes apparent here but also Rogado’s increasing focus on what remains when all that is superfluous is simply omitted. Or, as he puts it: “when you integrate the spiritual into the technical”.

Two exhibitions across an area of over 1000 square metres
While “Giacomo Santiago Rogado: All that you see” at Kunstmuseum Thun offers an overview of the artist’s lengthy career, including paintings as well as works on paper and large installations from the past, the exhibition “Giacomo Santiago Rogado: Out of Sight” at the Thun-Panorama is devoted to what has been on the artist’s mind recently: an intense examination of his surroundings. In producing a work expressly for the glazed extension of the Thun Panorama, he considered both the interior and what is outside, namely the idyllic Schadaupark. Perception, concentration and connection are fundamental themes Rogado addresses as he invites the viewer to slow down and engage with the intimacy of the painting.

Giacomo Santiago Rogado, born in Lucerne in 1979, is a Swiss painter of Spanish-Italian origin who today lives and works in Basel and Berlin. His works have been shown in numerous institutional solo and group exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad, including at the Städtische Galerie in Delmenhorst (2021), Kunstmuseum Solothurn (2019), Helmhaus Zürich (2014), Museum im Bellpark in Kriens (2013) and Kunstmuseum Luzern (2009) as well as in group exhibitions at the Centre d’art Pasquart in Biel (2022), Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau (2014) and Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (2010).

Zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte des Kunstmuseums Thun bespielt ein Künstler sowohl den Thunerhof wie auch das Thun-Panorama. Seine erste übersichtsartige Ausstellung “Giacomo Santiago Rogado: All that you see” und die raumgreifende Installation “Giacomo Santiago Rogado. Ausser Sicht” im Schadaupark zeigen, wie sich das Schaffen des Schweizer Künstlers Giacomo Santiago Rogado über die Jahrzehnte verändert hat: von der figurativen zur abstrakten Malerei – und darüber hinaus.

Illusion, Intuition, Inspiration und Transformation sind Stichworte, die im Zusammenhang mit Giacomo Santiago Rogados Schaffen gerne genannt werden. Von ihm selbst, der mit Vorliebe prozesshaft arbeitet und dem Zufall gespannt seinen Freiraum lässt. Und von den Betrachter:innen, die in seinem Werk nicht das Endgültige, die Wahrheit finden, sondern einen Anstoss für eigene Gedanken. Seit über 20 Jahren fasziniert Giacomo Santiago Rogado, der mit renommierten Preisen wie dem Swiss Art Award (2007), dem Manor Kunstpreis Zentralschweiz (2009) oder dem Anerkennungspreis der Stadt Luzern (2013) ausgezeichnet wurde, mit seinen Bildern. Sie ziehen einen tief rein in den Bildraum. Da dieser keine Grenzen aufweist, öffnet sich gleichzeitig eine unendliche Weite.

Giacomo Santiago Rogado ist bekannt für seine eindrucksvollen Kompositionen, die sich eingehend mit Farbe und Form auseinandersetzen. Die immer neuen Pfade, die er als Künstler und Forschender geht, sein verspieltes Ausloten von Grenzen und Bedingungen der zeitgenössischen Malerei, wirken zuweilen verblüffend. Eine niederschwellige Möglichkeit, sich der erstaunlichen Schaffenskraft und Experimentierfreude Rogados bewusst zu werden, ist die Gegenüberstellung eines Werks wie “Bellevue” und der begehbaren Rauminstallation “Growing together through emotions over time”. Sichtbar wird nicht nur der Weg von der figurativen zur abstrakten Malerei. Es zeigt sich auch die zunehmende Zuwendung Rogados zu dem, was bleibt, wenn man Überflüssiges weglässt. Oder wie er sagt: “das Spirituelle in das Technische integriert”.

Zwei Ausstellungen auf einer Fläche von über 1000 Quadratmetern
Während “Giacomo Santiago Rogado: All that you see” im Kunstmuseum Thun einen Überblick über Rogados langjähriges Schaffen zeigt und sowohl Malerei, wie auch Papierarbeiten und grosse Installationen aus der Vergangenheit umfasst, ist die Ausstellung “Giacomo Santiago Rogado. Ausser Sicht” im Thun-Panorama Ausdruck dessen, was den Künstler in jüngster Zeit umtreibt: die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der Umgebung. Bei der Entstehung seines, speziell auf den verglasten Ergänzungsbau des Thun-Panoramas zugeschnittenen Werks, arbeitete er mit dem Innen- wie auch mit dem Aussenraum, dem idyllischen Schadaupark. Wahrnehmung, Konzentration und Verbundenheit sind grundlegende Themen, mit denen Rogado den Betrachter zur Entschleunigung auffordert, um sich auf die Intimität der Malerei einzulassen.

Giacomo Santiago Rogado, geboren 1979 in Luzern, ist ein Schweizer Maler spanisch-italienischer Herkunft, der heute in Basel und Berlin lebt und arbeitet.
