Giacomo Santiago Rogado – Depth of Field

Galerie Bernhard Knaus Fine Art presents the work groups “Coalescence” and “Intuition” by Spanish-Italian artist Giacomo Santiago Rogado in the solo exhibition “Depth of Field.”

An encounter with the works of painter Giacomo Santiago Rogado (b. 1979) is characterized by seductive fascination. A colorful ballad with a hypnotic effect, they immediately capture the viewer’s imagination. Rogado’s abstract paintings are inspired by meditation. The painter’s thematic engagement with contemplation and deceleration runs through his entire oeuvre, for which he primarily employs materials such as oil, pigment or acrylic paint on canvas.

Bernhard Knaus Fine Art presents the two painting series “Coalescence” (2014-2018) and “Intuition” (2016-2018) in the exhibition “Depth of Field.” Rogado’s painting practice centers on the visual effect of the rhythmic movement of color and shape, as well as their influence on our perception of depth of field. Rogado uses two distinct techniques when creating his works, which oscillate between painterly accuracy and chance, between hypnotic effect and meditative dimension.

The pieces of the “Coalescence” series employ two additive colors each. The symmetrical curving lines cutting through the center of the respective canvas create a three-dimensional effect that conjures up associations of spirals. The focused work necessary for creating these pieces with their accurate lines requires the artist to enter a meditative state. The lines converge on the center of each of these pieces in a manner reminiscent of centripetal force, thus creating the optical effect of a rhythmic surface that pulls you in.

In contrast to the “Coalescence” pieces, which the painter realizes perfectly and with great concentration, Rogado looks to controlled chance for his painting series “Intuition”. In order to create the large-scale works dominated by colorful inky blotches, he thus places untreated canvases in a trough filled with water, in order to then carefully apply color pigments. While each work is based on a considered combination of colors, the formal composition is created intuitively. The characteristic effect is consequently achieved through the water evaporating. The contrasting and in part blurry areas of color have something of a hypnotizing effect, as we try to follow and focus on the forms on the canvas. The paintings conjure up associations with single-celled organisms, sponges or the cosmos. For the painter, the process of working is at the forefront of his thinking. The interplay of colors, forms and movement exerts a hypnotic pull on the viewer that is hard to resist.

In this context, the title “Depth of Field” appears like a word play intended to sensitize us to the contemplation of the works. Rogado himself describes his works as “rooms,” which he frequents, and to which he thus attributes three-dimensionality. At the same time, he speaks of painting as a “thought process that has materialized on the surface of the canvas.” Visitors to the exhibition will find it easy to move around these spaces, to journey inward and to allow their gaze upon themselves and their environment to be sharpened – quite in keeping with meditation.

Giacomo Santiago Rogado was born in Lucerne in 1979, studied Fine Art at the Lucerne University of Art and Design and lives and works in Berlin and Lucerne. In 2007 he was awarded the Swiss Federal Prize for Art, in 2009, Central Switzerland’s Manor Art Prize and in 2013 he received the City of Lucerne’s Recognition Award. The most recent occasion where Rogado’s work was exhibited was in a solo show at Helmhaus Zurich which received a great deal of attention. November 23 Rogado will be opening a solo exhibition at Kunstmuseum Solothurn (Switzerland).

Die Begegnung mit den Arbeiten des Malers Giacomo Santiago Rogado (*1979) gleichen einer verführerischen Faszination – in einer farbenprächtigen Ballade von hypnotischer Wirkung ziehen sie den Betrachter unmittelbar in ihren Bann. Rogados abstrakte Gemälde sind durch die Meditation inspiriert. Die thematische Auseinandersetzung des Malers mit Kontemplation und Entschleunigung zieht sich durch sein Gesamtwerk, für welches er hauptsächlich Materialien wie Öl-, Pigment- und Acrylfarbe auf Leinwand verwendet.

Bernhard Knaus Fine Art stellt in der Ausstellung “Depth of Field” die zwei Gemälde-Serien “Coalescence” (2014-2018) und “Intuition” (2016-2018) aus. Der optische Effekt rhythmisierter Bewegung von Farbe und Form und ihr Einfluss auf die Wahrnehmung von Tiefenschärfe stehen im Zentrum seiner Malerei. Hierzu verwendet Rogado zwei Techniken, die zwischen malerischer Akkuratesse und Zufall pendeln – von hypnotischen Effekt und meditativer Dimension.

Die Arbeiten der “Coalescence” Serie bestehen aus zwei additiven Farben. Durch regelmäßige zur Bildmitte gezogene schwungvolle Linien wird ein dreidimensionaler Effekt erzeugt, der Assoziationen zu Spiralen weckt. Das konzentrierte Erarbeiten zur Erzielung der wiederholenden akkuraten Linienführung versetzt den Künstler selbst in einen meditativen Zustand. Durch das Fliehen der Linien zur Bildmitte – vergleichbar mit der Zentripetalkraft – entsteht der optische Effekt einer rhythmisierten Oberfläche mit Sogwirkung.

Anders als bei “Coalescence”, die der Maler mit hoher Konzentration perfektioniert ausführt, gibt sich Rogado bei der Gemäldeserie “Intuition” dem kontrollierten Zufall hin. So werden die großflächigen, von farblicher Tinktur dominierten Arbeiten zunächst als unbehandelte Leinwände in eine mit Wasser gefüllte Wanne gelegt, anschließend mit gezielt aufgetragenen Farbpigmenten behandelt. Zwar geht jedem Werk eine durchdachte Farbstimmung voraus, die formale Gestaltung wird jedoch intuitiv geformt. Die anschließende Wasserverdunstung liefert den charakteristischen Effekt. Nahezu hypnotisiert folgt man dem Bedürfnis die unterschiedlich kontrastierten und teilweise verschwommenen Farbbereiche auf der Leinwand mit den Augen zu fokussieren. Die Gemälde wecken Assoziationen an Einzeller, Schwämme oder den Kosmos. Der Prozess des Arbeitens steht für den Maler im Vordergrund. Durch das Zusammenspiel von Farben, Formen und Bewegung werden die Betrachter von einem hypnotischen Sog erfasst, dem sie sich kaum entziehen können.

Vor diesem Hintergrund erscheint der Titel der Ausstellung “Depth of Field” als Wortspiel, welches für die Kontemplation sensibilisieren soll. Rogado selbst bezeichnet seine Werke als “Zimmer”, in denen er sich bewegt und ihnen damit eine Räumlichkeit anerkennt. Gleichzeitig beschreibt er die Malerei als “einen an der Oberfläche der Leinwand materialisierten Denkprozess”. So fällt es dem Besucher der Ausstellung leicht sich in diesen Räumen zu bewegen, sich auf eine Reise ins Innere zu begeben und seinen Blick auf das Selbst und die eigene Umwelt zu schärfen  – ganz der Meditation entsprechend.

Giacomo Santiago Rogado wurde 1979 in Luzern geboren, studierte Bildende Kunst an der Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Luzern und lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Luzern. Im Jahre 2007 erhielt er den Eidgenössischen Preis für Kunst, 2009 den Manor Kunstpreis der Zentralschweiz und 2013 wurde er mit dem Anerkennungspreis der Stadt Luzern ausgezeichnet. Zuletzt waren Rogados Arbeiten in einer vielbeachteten Einzelausstellung im Helmhaus Zürich zu sehen. Am 23. November wird Rogado eine Einzelausstellung im Kunstmuseum Solothurn (Schweiz) eröffnen.
