Kosaku Kanechika is pleased to present “Changeable Sight”, a solo exhibition by Hiroto Tomonaga. Hiroto Tomonaga paints the slight, transitory moments when a sight before him appears as something else. This adjustment that takes place in his vision gradually translates to the texture of paint on his canvas, and becomes fixed on the surface. The resulting paintings, while fixed, retain an air of anticipated resumption, and are an embodiment of a sense of helplessness that the artist has towards the world in front of his eyes.
One immediately perceives the peculiarity of the painting’s surface upon close inspection of Tomonaga’s tableaux – at times viscous or coarse, the surface shows the artist’s strong fixation with texture. Although the impasto is not thick, Tomonaga creates a surface that is full of depth – the paint is built up by the brush, knead or layered into the surface. The painting has an energy that makes it appear as though it is breathing, pulsating on the canvas surface, while also seeming to approach extinguishment, yet not at all modest. To see the painting with one’s own eyes renders its impression much more powerfully than to see it on a screen.
Tomonaga keeps the habit of writing down in a notebook words that come to his mind or terms that fascinate him. When this act extends to his painting practice, his thoughts and visions come into being not as concrete form but as something that shifts and quivers.
This indeterminate quality of Tomonaga’s works escapes language or earthly logic, triggering rousing trembles in a world where we find comfort but perhaps also constriction.
