Jeffrey Conley – Resonance

Jeffrey Conley is one of the world’s most renowned contemporary landscape photographers. Whether in the United States, Iceland, New Zealand or the Engadine in Switzerland – his sublime images do not depict the landscape; they reveal nature, experienced as a spiritual place. After taking Paris Photo and Photo London by storm, Conley now has his first solo exhibition in Europe at Bildhalle Zurich.

Ansel Adams, one of the most important landscape photographers in the medium’s history, clearly indicated in his personal letters that since his experience of nature was fundamentally mystical, his most persistent artistic problem was how to convert that experience into physical evidence. Jeffrey Conley could as easily have made this observation as well. Aligned with the important tradition of landscape photography in the United States, he joins his great processor, for he, too, is an ambassador whose work embodies a plea to restore the mindfulness and respect of nature.

The meditative radiance of Conley’s photographs is a logical consequence of his focused and profoundly contemplative approach. His treatment of perspective, scale and lighting yields images of unparalleled simplicity and tranquillity. Conley is also brilliantly versed in printing techniques: whether silver gelatin, platinum or pigment prints on bamboo paper, the works are all produced by hand with meticulous care and in-depth expertise. The artist leaves nothing to chance, from the surface structure and quality of the paper to the coloring and hand-coating of the prints. His mastery can be fully appreciated only by looking at the original prints: a velvety surface and the rich gradation of blacks and greys recall drawings in pen and ink and yet, at the same time, they are an eloquent ode to classical photography.

I’ve never understood why our societal and spiritual priorities as a species do not overwhelmingly demonstrate our gratitude by placing our planet at the pinnacle of the reverential order.

Nature is constant change, and photography is particularly well suited to capture and amplify the swirling fluidity and the wonderfully serendipitous moments born of the ephemeral. Photographing nature is a very specific kind of exercise in mindfulness. The photographs in this exhibition represent some of my observations while investigating nature over these last several years. Jeffrey Conley ist einer der renommiertesten Landschaftsfotografen der Gegenwart. Ob die USA, Island, Neuseeland oder das Engadin – seine sublimen Landschaftsbilder dokumentieren die Landschaften nicht, sondern sind Resultat einer Erfahrung der Natur als spirituellem Ort. Nach fulminanten Erfolgen an der Paris Photo und der Photo London zeigt die Bildhalle Zürich die erste Einzelausstellung in Europa.

Ansel Adams, einer der wichtigsten Landschafsfotografen der Fotogeschichte, hat in seinen privaten Briefen deutlich gemacht, dass seine Erfahrungen der natürlichen Welt im Grunde mystische Erfahrungen waren und dass es sein nachhaltigstes künstlerisches Problem war, den physikalischen Beweis für diese Erfahrung zu erbringen. Eine Aussage, die durchaus von Jeffrey Conley stammen könnte. Auch er ist ein Vertreter der bedeutenden Tradition der amerikanischen Landschaftsfotografie und wie sein grosser Vorgänger ein Botschafter, der mit seinem Werk dazu aufruft, die Achtsamkeit und den Respekt für die Natur zurückzugewinnen.

So fokussiert und kontemplativ, wie Conley fotografiert, haben auch seine Fotografien eine meditative Strahlkraft. Er spielt mit Perspektiven, Massstab und Lichtstimmungen und kreiert dabei Naturbilder von einzigartiger Schlichtheit und Stille. Darüber hinaus ist Jeffrey Conley ein Meister der Printtechniken: Silbergelatine-, Platinum- oder Pigment-Prints auf Bambuspapier – alle Abzüge werden mit grösster Sorgfalt und fundiertem Wissen durch den Künstler von Hand angefertigt. Von der Oberflächenstruktur und Beschaffenheit der Papiere über die Tönung und Handbeschichtung der Prints, auch hier überlässt Jeffrey Conley nichts dem Zufall. Um diese Meisterhaftigkeit zu begreifen, muss man die Original-Abzüge sehen: eine samtige Oberflächenstruktur und reiche Abstufungen von Schwarz- und Grautönen erinnern an Tusch- oder Bleistiftzeichnungen und sind doch eine Ode an die klassische Fotografie.
