João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva – The Sleeping Eskimo

The internationally acclaimed Portuguese artists João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva capture magical moments of everyday life in their films, sculptures, photographs and camera-obscura installations. They take viewers on a fascinating journey into the realm of the mysterious. Within the solo exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus the filmic, sculptural and photograph work are combined in new and unique ways. Many of the works shown were produced especially for this exhibition.

João Maria Gusmão (b. 1979) and Pedro Paiva (b. 1977) are interested in situations where the rationally explicable meets mystical occurrences. In their films, sculptures, photographs and camera-obscura installations the Portuguese artists capture the magical moments of everyday scenes and casual gestures: the wing beat of a parrot, a fried egg in a pan, a turning wheel. What the artists catch on their camera and capture on celluloid and photographic paper or cast in bronze are poetic, philosophical reflections on the world.

Since 2001, Gusmão & Paiva have been creating a fascinating oeuvre that attracted international attention early on. Ever since representing Portugal at the 2009 Venice Biennale, they are acclaimed by the international art scene. More recently, major institutional solo exhibitions have established them as prominent contemporary art figures. In 2013 the artists showed their work for the first time at the Aargauer Kunsthaus as part of the themed exhibition “Rhythm in it”. Now the Kunsthaus is bringing the successful artist duo back to Switzerland for a comprehensive solo exhibition focusing on current filmic works that were created in the context of a multi-week sojourn in Japan. Produced especially for the show in Aarau, these new films are juxtaposed with selected older works and orchestrated in room-size installations.

Presented in addition to this are new and never-before-shown photographs and bronze sculptures that attest to the humour and profoundness with which Gusmão & Paiva manage to playfully seduce their audiences. The exhibition in Aarau marks the first time the artists display their hitherto rarely shown bronze sculptures along with filmic and photographic works. This meshing of previously parallel creative areas enables visitors to establish surprising cross-references between the various bodies of work and gain deeper insights into this multi-layered oeuvre.

In their sculptures the Lisbon-based artists examine the ways in which we relate to reality, only to turn this relationship upside down with analytical precision, sensitivity, and humour. The bronze-cast objects represent everyday objects and situations, scenes from comics, buildings and, time and again, figures and animals. Due to the interplay of title and work and the unusual constellations the sculptures undergo a at times surreal shift in meaning.

At the same time the artists frequently hover on the borderline between the static medium of bronze sculpture and the moving medium of film by creating sculptures that represent a chronological sequence, such as the turning of the egg in the frying pan.

Gusmão & Paiva’s filmic works are characterised by a spare visual language without sound. They produce their short films with simple means, often working with amateur actors in everyday situations and foregoing great technical effort. They present the footage using 16mm and 35mm projectors. The aesthetics evoke memories of the bygone silent era and experimental films. At the Aargauer Kunsthaus several films are related to one another in thematic constellations. They coalesce with the rhythm of the rattling film projector into a dreamscape in which past and present flare up and overlap.

João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva describe their artistic work as “recreational metaphysics.” Philosophical and metaphysical considerations as well as scientific experiments form the basis of their works which combine anthropological/informative, experimental artistic and philosophical/magical ways of looking at things. Many works include references to the history of art, photography and film. Other important sources of inspiration are the writings of the French novelist and poet Victor Hugo (1802 – 1885), the philosopher Réne Descartes (1596 – 1650) as well as the experiments of the photographic pioneer Eadweard Muybridge (1830 – 1904), to mention only a few. In spite of their multi-layered frame of reference, the ponderousness of theoretical discourse is foreign to the works of Gusmão & Paiva assembled at the Aargauer Kunsthaus. On the contrary: they take viewers on a fascinating journey into the realm of the mysterious and invite them to participate in the artist duo’s visual experiments.

A comprehensive catalogue in German and English is published in conjunction with the exhibition of João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva. Produced in cooperation with the Kölnischer Kunstverein in Cologne, which hosted a solo presentation of the artist duo in the fall of 2015, this volume is published by Walther König Verlag. The richly illustrated catalogue includes two essays by internationally renowned authors and curators João Ribas of Fundação De Serralves in Porto and Anselm Franke of Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, as well as an introduction by Madeleine Schuppli, Director Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau. Also included is a text written for the exhibition by the artists themselves.

Ils entraînent les spectateurs dans un voyage fascinant à travers le monde du mystère. Dans l’exposition personnelle que l’Aargauer Kunsthaus leur consacre, l’œuvre filmique, plastique et photographique se conjugue d’une manière nouvelle et singulière. Plusieurs des travaux présentés ont été conçus spécialement pour cette exposition.

João Maria Gusmão (*1979) et Pedro Paiva (*1977) s’intéressent aux situations qui marquent la rencontre entre les faits que l’on peut expliquer de manière rationnelle et ceux qui relèvent d’une dimension mystique. Dans leurs films, sculptures, photographies et installations en chambre noire, les artistes portugais saisissent les instants magiques de scènes tirées de la vie quotidienne et de gestes fortuits : le battement d’ailes d’un perroquet, des œufs au plat dans une poêle, une roue qui tourne. Il s’agit de considérations poétiques et philosophiques sur le monde, que les deux artistes retiennent au moyen de leur appareil photographique, fixent sur le celluloïd ou le papier photo ou coulent dans le bronze.

Depuis 2001, Gusmão & Paiva créent une œuvre fascinante, qui a vite retenu l’attention de la scène internationale. La consécration définitive des deux artistes au niveau international arrive en 2009, lorsqu’ils ont représenté le Portugal à la 53ème Biennale de Venise. Grâce à d’importantes expositions personnelles et institutionnelles, ils se sont récemment imposés en tant que représentants de premier plan de la création artistique contemporaine. Leur première présence à l’Aargauer Kunsthaus remonte à 2013, lorsqu’ils ont projeté un film dans le cadre de l’exposition thématique “Rhythm in it”. Le musée argovien a ramené en Suisse le célèbre duo d’artistes en lui consacrant une vaste exposition personnelle. Celle-ci est axée entre autres sur les derniers films réalisés par les deux artistes durant un séjour de plusieurs semaines au Japon. Produits spécialement pour l’exposition à Aarau, ces nouveaux films côtoient un choix de travaux plus anciens dans un agencement d’installations qui remplissent l’espace de manière impressionnante.

À cela s’ajoutent une série de nouvelles photographies encore jamais exposées ainsi que des sculptures en bronze, caractérisées par un humour et un sens caché grâce auxquels Gusmão & Paiva séduisent leur public de manière ludique. Le duo d’artistes réunit pour la première fois, dans une exposition, des sculptures en bronze rarement présentées jusqu’ici et des œuvres filmiques et photographiques. Cette imbrication entre domaines de la création artistique jusque-là parallèles permet aux visiteurs de l’Aargauer Kunsthaus d’établir des interconnexions nouvelles et surprenantes entre les différents groupes d’objets et de porter un regard plus profond sur cette œuvre aux multiples facettes.

Dans leurs sculptures, les deux artistes domiciliés à Lisbonne explorent notre rapport à la réalité, pour ensuite le bouleverser avec précision analytique, délicatesse et humour. Les œuvres en bronze représentent des objets et des situations de la vie quotidienne, des motifs tirés de bandes dessinées, des bâtiments et, constamment, des figures et des animaux. Concernant les sculptures, l’interaction entre le titre et l’œuvre ainsi que les constellations inhabituelles entraînent un glissement sémantique parfois surréel. Les artistes évoluent constamment à la limite entre la dimension statique de la sculpture en bronze et la dimension dynamique du film, et ce, en créant des sculptures qui expriment un déroulement temporel, comme par exemple le fait de retourner des œufs au plat dans une poêle.

Les films de Gusmão & Paiva se caractérisent par un langage visuel parcimonieux, dépourvu de son. Les deux artistes utilisent des moyens simples pour produire leurs courts-métrages ; ils travaillent souvent avec des actrices et acteurs amateurs ou filment des situations de la vie quotidienne et renoncent à utiliser des moyens techniques importants. Ils présentent leurs films sur des projecteurs 16mm et 35mm. Leur esthétique évoque des souvenirs liés à l’époque du cinéma muet et aux débuts du cinéma expérimental. À l’Aargauer Kunsthaus, plusieurs films sont mis en relation les uns avec les autres à travers des constellations thématiques. Ils s’associent au rythme des projecteurs bruyants pour créer un paysage onirique où le passé et le présent se rallument et se superposent.

João Maria Gusmão et Pedro Paiva qualifient leur travail artistique de ” métaphysique reposante “. Les réflexions philosophiques et métaphysiques ainsi que les expériences scientifiques constituent le fondement de leurs travaux, où se conjuguent des considérations d’ordre anthropologique et éclairé, expérimental et artistique, philosophique et magique. Plusieurs œuvres présentent des liens avec l’histoire de l’art, de la photographie et du cinéma. Les textes de l’écrivain français Victor Hugo (1802–1885) et du philosophe René Descartes (1596–1650) ou encore les expériences du pionnier de la photographie Eadweard Muybridge (1830–1904) constituent également des sources d’inspiration essentielles, pour n’en citer que quelques-unes. Malgré la complexité de leur cadre référentiel, les œuvres de Gusmão & Paiva réunies à l’Aargauer Kunsthaus évitent les lourdeurs des débats théoriques. Bien au contraire, elles entraînent les visiteurs dans un voyage fascinant à travers le monde du mystère et les invitent à participer aux expériences visuelles du duo d’artistes.

Ce volume richement illustré contient deux articles des conservateurs et auteurs renommés sur le plan international que sont João Ribas, Fundação De Serralves, Porto et Anselm Franke, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, ainsi qu’une introduction de Madeleine Schuppli, directrice de l’Aargauer Kunsthaus. Ces contributions sont complétées par un texte rédigé par les artistes eux-mêmes pour l’exposition. Publié aux éditions Walther König.

Sie entführen die Betrachtenden auf eine faszinierende Reise ins Reich des Rätselhaften. In der Einzelschau im Aargauer Kunsthaus verbindet sich das filmische, plastische und fotografische Werk auf neue und einmalige Weise. Viele der gezeigten Arbeiten sind eigens für die Ausstellung entstanden.

João Maria Gusmão (*1979) und Pedro Paivas (*1977) Interesse gilt Situationen, in denen rational Erklärbares und mystische Begebenheiten aufeinander treffen. In ihren Filmen, Skulpturen, Fotografien und Camera obscura-Installationen fangen die portugiesischen Künstler die magischen Momente alltäglicher Szenen und beiläufiger Gesten ein: den Flügelschlag eines Papageis, ein Spiegelei in der Pfanne, ein sich drehendes Rad. Es sind poetisch-philosophische Betrachtungen der Welt, welche sie mit der Kamera festhalten und auf Zelluloid oder Fotopapier bannen oder in Bronze giessen.

Gusmão & Paiva kreieren seit 2001 ein faszinierendes Œuvre, das früh internationale Aufmerksamkeit hervorgerufen hat. Spätestens seitdem sie 2009 Portugal an der 53. Biennale in Venedig vertreten haben, werden sie von der internationalen Kunstszene gefeiert. Durch wichtige institutionelle Einzelausstellungen haben sie sich in jüngster Zeit als führende Vertreter des zeitgenössischen Kunstschaffens etabliert. Die Künstler waren im Rahmen der thematischen Schau “Rhythm in it” (2013) mit einer Filmprojektion ein erstes Mal im Aargauer Kunsthaus präsent. Das Kunsthaus holt das erfolgreiche Künstlerduo nun für eine umfassende Einzelausstellung zurück in die Schweiz. Ein Schwerpunkt der Schau liegt auf aktuellen filmischen Arbeiten, die im Rahmen eines mehrwöchigen Japanaufenthaltes des Künstlerduos entstanden sind. Eigens für die Ausstellung in Aarau produziert, werden diese neuen Filme ausgewählten älteren Arbeiten gegenübergestellt und in beeindruckenden, raumfüllenden Installationen orchestriert.

In Ergänzung dazu werden neue, noch nie gezeigte Fotografien und Bronzeskulpturen präsentiert, die vom Witz und Hintersinn zeugen, mit dem Gusmão & Paiva ihr Publikum spielerisch verführen. Zum ersten Mal stellt das Künstlerduo die bis anhin selten gezeigten Bronzeskulpturen zusammen mit filmischen und fotografischen Arbeiten aus. Diese Verzahnung der bis anhin parallelen Schaffensbereiche ermöglicht den Besucherinnen und Besuchern in Aarau, neue und überraschende Querbezüge zwischen den unterschiedlichen Werkgruppen herzustellen und vertiefte Einsichten in dieses vielschichtige Œuvre zu gewinnen.

In ihren Skulpturen untersuchen die in Lissabon lebenden Künstler unser Verhältnis zur Realität, um dieses dann mit analytischer Präzision, Feingefühl und Humor auf den Kopf zu stellen. Die aus Bronze gegossenen Objekte repräsentieren alltägliche Gegenstände und Situationen, Motive aus Comics, Gebäude und immer wieder Figuren und Tiere. Durch das Zusammenspiel zwischen Titel und Werk und durch ungewöhnliche Konstellationen erfahren die Skulpturen eine mitunter surreale Bedeutungsverschiebung. Die Künstler bewegen sich dabei immer wieder auf der Grenze zwischen dem statischen Medium der Bronzeplastik und dem bewegten Medium des Films, indem sie Skulpturen schaffen, die einen zeitlichen Verlauf darstellen, wie etwa das Drehen des Spielgeleis in der Bratpfanne.

Gusmão & Paivas filmische Arbeiten zeichnen sich durch eine sparsame Bildsprache ohne Ton aus. Sie produzieren ihre Kurzfilme mit einfachen Mitteln, sie arbeiten oft mit Laienschauspielerinnen und -schauspielern oder filmen in Alltagsituationen und verzichten auf grossen technischen Aufwand. Das Filmmaterial präsentieren sie auf 16mm und 35mm Projektoren. Die Ästhetik evoziert Erinnerungen an die Ära des Stummfilms und an frühe Experimentalfilme. Mehrere Filme werden im Aargauer Kunsthaus in thematischen Konstellationen zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt. Sie verbinden sich mit dem Rhythmus der ratternden Filmprojektoren zu einer Traumlandschaft, in der Vergangenes und Gegenwärtiges aufflackert und sich überlagert.

João Maria Gusmão und Pedro Paiva bezeichnen ihre künstlerische Arbeit als “erholsame Metaphysik”. Philosophische und metaphysische Überlegungen sowie wissenschaftliche Experimente bilden die Grundlage ihrer Arbeiten, in denen sie anthropologisch-aufklärerische, experimentell-künstlerische und philosophisch-magische Betrachtungsweisen vereinen. Viele Werke weisen Bezüge zur Kunst-, Fotografie- und Filmgeschichte auf. Trotz ihres vielschichtigen Bezugsrahmens liegt den im Aargauer Kunsthaus versammelten Arbeiten von Gusmão & Paiva die Schwere theoretischer Diskurse fern. Im Gegenteil, sie entführen die Betrachterinnen und Betrachter auf eine faszinierende Reise ins Reich des Rätselhaften und laden ein, an den visuellen Experimenten des Künstlerduos teilzunehmen.
