Katsura Funakoshi is considered a leading name in the field of visual arts in his country, Japan. Working predominantely with camphor wood, his works, usually depicting human figures from the waist up, have a great poetical effect, and are striking and distinctive. Funakoshi works this material in a personal way and leaves visible both the grain of the wood and the marks of carving.
Funakoshi has exhibited his work at the Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Biennale, the Documenta IX, and the Shanghai Biennale, and his work is represented in several art museums in Japan and other countries. He lives and works in Tokyo.

Funakoshi wird in seinem Heimatland Japan als eine führende Persönlichkeit auf dem Gebiet der Bildenden Kunst angesehen. Hauptsächlich in Kampfer-Holz arbeitend stellt er in der Regel Figuren bis zur Hüfte dar. Sie sind sehr poetisch, eindrucksvoll und unverwechselbar. Funakoshi bearbeitet das Material auf persönliche Weise, er lässt sowohl die Strukturen des Holzes als auch die Spuren des Schnitzwerkzeugs stehen.
Funakoshi hat seine Arbeiten auf der Biennale von Venedig, auf der Biennale von Sao Paolo, der Documenta IX und der Shanghai Biennale ausgestellt. Sie befinden sich in Japan und international in vielen Museumssammlungen. Er lebt und arbeitet in Tokyo.
