Lina Scheynius – Exhibition 04

“Lina Scheynius perceives the world by turning her gaze upon herself. Her body is the seismograph by which she measures the world. She encounters herself by exploring her body. It tells her what she senses. And the camera translates. Direct as these images appear to be, they too are created through the medium of an instrument: the camera. What is it that guides the camera? Is it reason, instinct, or the signals of that (the body) which is being photographed? Is it the motif or the author? Or is it perhaps the camera itself – the “third eye”, the image, that is directing here and becoming autonomous? The issue is complex because, for once, the motif and the author are united here. Christophe Guye Galerie is proud to announce the second solo exhibition with the latest works of Lina Scheynius (*1981, Sweden) at the gallery. Her work has evolved into a complex and nuanced signifying visual language, placing sexuality and nudity less in the foreground, yet – the works are more intimate than ever. The viewer is invited to dive into Scheynius’ personal and sensitive world.

Lina Scheynius was raised in Trollhättan, in the southwest of Sweden, and currently lives and works in London. Self-taught Scheynius received her first camera at the delicate age of ten. To date Scheynius has been very selective with exhibiting her work, occasionally partaking in group exhibitions such as “What’s Next? The Future of the Photography” at FOAM Museum, Amsterdam, “Looking for Love”, at the Vidvinkel at Centrum för Fotografi in Stockholm, “Various Photographs”, curated by Tim Barber for the New York Photo Festival, European Month of Photography at MUSA in Vienna, Taka Ishii Gallery Photography/Film in Tokyo or most recently Photo Vogue Festival in Milan.

In conjunction with the exhibition her latest book “Book 09” will be published. It is the latest publication, which Lina Scheynius publishes herself since 2008.

“Lina Scheynius erfährt die Welt, indem sie den Blick auf sich selbst richtet. Ihr Körper ist der Seismograph, der die Welt empfängt. Sie begegnet sich selbst, indem sie ihren Körper absucht. Er teilt ihr mit, was sie empfindet. Und die Kamera ist die Übersetzerin. So unmittelbar, wie diese Bilder erscheinen, sind doch auch sie über die Vermittlung eines Instruments, die Kamera, entstanden. Was war es, das die Kamera lenkte: der Kopf, der Instinkt – oder die Signale dessen (am Körper), was fotografiert wurde? Das Motiv oder die Autorin? Oder ist es gar die Kamera selbst, dieses “dritte Auge”, das Bild, das hier Regie führt und sich verselbständigt? Komplex ist die Sache, weil das Motiv hier für einmal eine Einheit bildet mit der Autorin. Eine Identität. Das Motiv und die Autorin sind identisch. Die Identität reflektiert sich. Die Christophe Guye Galerie freut sich, die zweite Einzelausstellung von Lina Scheynius (*1981, Schweden) in ihren Räumen anzukünden. Die Ausstellung zeigt ihre neusten Arbeiten. Seit ihren Anfängen hat sich ihre Bildsprache wesentlich weiterentwickelt. Sie stellt Sexualität und Nacktheit weniger in den Vordergrund und doch sind die Arbeiten intimer denn je. Der Betrachter wird eingeladen in Scheynius’ ganz persönliche, sensible Bildwelt einzutauchen. Für diese beschäftigte sie sich neu auch mit Mehrfachbelichtungen.

Die in London lebende und arbeitende Lina Scheynius wuchs in Trollhättan, Schweden, auf. Sie näherte sich autodidaktisch der Fotografie, als sie im Alter von zehn ihre erste Kamera geschenkt bekam. Bis heute war Scheynius sehr selektiv bezüglich dem Ausstellen ihrer Arbeit, und nahm nur gelegentlich an Gruppenausstellungen teil, wie z.B. “What’s Next? The Future of the Photography” im renommierten FOAM Museum in Amsterdam, “Looking for Love” im Vidvinkel im Centrum för Fotografi in Stockholm, “Various Photographs” am New York Photo Festival, kuratiert von Tim Barber, dem Europäischen Monat der Fotografie im MUSA in Wien, “Exhibition 03” in der Taka Ishii Gallery in Tokio oder dem Vogue Photo Festival in Mailand.

Im Rahmen der Ausstellung wir auch ihr neuestes Buch “Book 09” erscheinen. Es ist die letzte Ausgabe der Buchreihe “Book” die Scheynius seit 2008 selbst herausgibt.
