Lisa Biedlingmaier, Roman Gysin, Manon Wertenbroek – Heavy Satin

 

“Heavy Satin” is an exhibition that aims to explore the potential of ambiguity, be it through the de-polarizing of stereotypes or by testing escapist strategies. The title seeks to conjure thoughts of an impending weight, subtly suggestive of the aggression and machismo of Heavy Metal yet also evoking the voluptuous feminine sensuality of satin.

In “Heavy Satin” categorical divisions between systems such as decoration vs. fine arts, tastefulness vs. vulgarity, masculinity vs. femininity, artifice vs. reality are challenged. The artists delve into the complexity of archetypal figures such as the witch or clown (contrasexuality), masquerade as an empowering device or the valorizing of aesthetic canons that have been pejoratively connoted, be it romanticism or the kitsch.

In the exhibition there is an omnipresent sense of the crafting and sometimes healing hand, with sculptures, painted photographs, and installations having tactile surfaces and textures such as satin, soil, rope, felt, zip, latex and tulle. We come to reminisce upon childhood with its magical memories of fantasy and role-play but also contrastingly to the adult world of BDSM with the fetishistic desire to touch, tie and tease.

The below are some poetic ruminations by the curators on the topics of contrasexuality, consciousness, intersectionality, fetish and materiality, camp, the potential in slippage, desire and more that are explored within the exhibition.

“Heavy Satin” ist eine Ausstellung, die das Potenzial der Mehrdeutigkeit auslotet, sei es durch die Entpolarisierung von Stereotypen oder durch das Erproben eskapistischer Strategien. Subtil beschwört der Ausstellungstitel Gedanken an ein sich anbahnendes Problem herauf, das die latente Aggression und der Machismo aus dem Kontext von Heavy Metal suggerieren. Zugleich schwingt im Titel jedoch auch der Gedanke an die mit femininer Sinnlichkeit in Verbindung gebrachte und oft erotisch konnotierte Textur von Satin mit.

In “Heavy Satin” werden kategorisch in Opposition zueinander gesetzte Systeme und Konzepte wie Dekoration vs. Bildende Kunst, Geschmack vs. Vulgarität, Männlichkeit vs. Weiblichkeit, Fiktion vs. Realität revidiert und auf den Prüfstand gestellt. Die Künstler*innen setzen sich mit der Komplexität archetypischer Figuren auseinander, wie der Hexe oder dem Clown (Kontrasexualität), mit Maskerade als Werkzeug der Ermächtigung oder mit der Aufwertung in Verruf geratener ästhetischer Register, mit jenem der Romantik etwa, oder dem Kitsch.

Die handwerklich-schöpferische Hand und ihre mitunter heilende Wirkung ist in der Ausstellung omnipräsent, sei es in den Skulpturen, den gemalten Fotografien und den Installationen mit ihren taktilen Oberflächen und Texturen wie Satin, Erde, Schnur, Filz, Reißverschluss, Latex und Tüll. Sie erinnern uns möglicherweise an unsere Kindheit, an die Erschaffung grenzenloser Welten und an fantastische Rollenspiele. Im Kontrast dazu liegen jedoch auch Assoziationen an Rollenspiele aus der Erwachsenenwelt nahe, an BDSM und den fetischisierten Wunsch nach Berührung, Verschnürung und Neckerei.
