From Cinema to Canvas – Portrait of the Actor as Artist on the Screen

As the exhibition title “Painting Acted Artists” implies, artist Mark Staff Brandl is showing a series of paintings wherein he has portrayed famous artists from art history. Yet in truth the images are of actors playing these figures. Brandl used references from feature and documentary films where he found the artists particularly well rendered, both visually and in character.

Brandl is both an artist and art historian, so is keenly aware of how nowadays we know art history chiefly from mediation through such technology as films, TV, internet, lectures and books. Conversely, contemporary viewers have never seen more art in person than ever before in history. The show is a kind of meditation on this dream of art history. It includes 20 paintings, a 3D object, a video and a Brandl Gift Shop.

Paintings include Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol (portrayed by Jeffrey Wright and David Bowie), Georgia O’Keeffe (Joan Allen), Paul Gauguin (Anthony Quinn), Rembrandt (Charles Laughton), Leonardo da Vinci (John Glover), Hugo Ball (Doug Fitch), and many more, as well as images of piles of books and materials related to mediated art history, some with exact hand-painted citations of the famous artists’ works.

The Roundtable about Metaphor(m) will include entertaining portrayals of authors and writing in film by Daniel Ammann, his own theory of metaphor(m) by Brandl, stimulating insights into metaphor and literature by Andreas Langlotz and a discussion of democracy and mediation in art by Alex Meszmer.

As in important museums, another form of art history mediation, Brandl’s exhibition will feature a Gift Shop as both installation and actual working shop of materials related to Brandl’s exhibition of mediated art history, organized by Diana Möhr: Posters, T-Shirts, buttons, books, a theme song CD and more.

Mark Staff Brandl was born in 1955 near Chicago, where he lived for many years. He has lived primarily in Switzerland since 1988, in Trogen for 15 years. He is an associate professor of art history and painting at the Kunstschule Liechtenstein and Schule für Gestaltung St. Gallen. Brandl is active internationally as an artist since 1980, has won various awards, had many publications and had numerous exhibitions. His shows include galleries and museums in the US, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Egypt, the Caribbean; specific cities include Paris, Moscow, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. Works of his have been acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Whitney Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the St. Gallen Art Museum, The Thurgau Museum of Fine Art, The E.T.H. Graphic Collection in Zurich, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the International Museum of Cartoon Art, the Art Museum Olten and others.

He studied art, art history, philosophy and literary theory at the University of Illinois, Illinois State University, Columbia Pac University, and received his Ph.D. in Art History magna cum laude from the University of Zurich in 2011.

Vom Kino auf die Leinwand – Porträt des Schauspielers als Künstler im Film

Wie der Titel der Ausstellung “Painting Acted Artists” nahelegt, zeigt Mark Staff Brandl eine Bilderserie berühmter Maler aus der Kunstgeschichte. In Wirklichkeit handelt es sich jedoch nicht um die Künstler selbst, sondern um Bilder jener Schauspieler, die diese Künstler im Kino verkörpert haben. Brandl stützt sich dabei auf Spiel- und Dokumentarfilme, die den Künstlern ein prominentes Gesicht geben und sowohl visuell wie in der Charakterdarstellung überzeugen.

Als ausübender Künstler und Kunsthistoriker ist sich Brandl der prägenden Wirkung medialer Vermittlung mehr als bewusst. Neben Vorträgen und Büchern sind es vor allem neue Technologien wie das Kino, das Fernsehen und das Internet, die uns mit den Stationen der Kunstgeschichte vertraut machen. Gleichzeitig stehen den Betrachterinnen und Betrachtern heute mehr Kunstwerke im Original zur Verfügung, als dies je der Fall war. So versteht sich die Ausstellung auch als Meditation über einen Traum der Kunstgeschichte. Sie umfasst 20 Gemälde, ein 3-D-Objekt, einen Videofilm und einen Brandl-Shop mit Geschenkartikeln.

Die Bilder zeigen Künstler wie Jean-Michel Basquiat und Andy Warhol (dargestellt von Jeffrey Wright und David Bowie), Georgia O’Keeffe (Joan Allen), Paul Gauguin (Anthony Quinn), Rembrandt (Charles Laughton), Leonardo da Vinci (John Glover) und Hugo Ball (Doug Fitch), aber auch Bücherstapel und Materialien zur Kunstvermittlung, darunter Beispiele mit handgemalten Zitaten berühmter Kunstwerke.

Ein Podiumsgespräch wagt grenzüberschreitende Betrachtungen. Diskutiert werden kuriose Darstellungen von Schriftstellern und Schreibprozessen im Film (Daniel Ammann), Brandls originäre Theorie der Kernmetapher, erhellende Einblicke in Forschungsergebnisse zur Metapher in der Literatur (Andreas Langlotz) sowie Demokratie und Geschichte im Spannungsfeld der Kunstvermittlung (Alex Meszmer).

Wie an wichtigen Schauplätzen der Kunstvermittlung üblich bietet Brandls Ausstellung einen Museumsshop, der sich als Installation und Werkstätte versteht. Unter der Leitung von Diana Möhr werden Objekte zur Ausstellung und zur medienübergreifenden Kunstvermittlung präsentiert: Plakate, T-Shirts, Buttons, Bücher, eine Titelmelodie auf CD und vieles mehr.

Mark Staff Brandl, der 1988 in die Schweiz kam und seit 15 Jahre in Trogen wohnt, wurde 1955 in der Nähe von Chicago geboren und hat lange Zeit dort gelebt. Er ist Dozent an der Kunstschule Liechtenstein und der Höheren Fachschule St. Gallen. Seit 1980 ist Brandl international als Künstler tätig, hat verschiedene Auszeichnungen erhalten und ist mit zahlreichen Publikationen und Ausstellungen an die Öffentlichkeit getreten. Seine künstlerischen Arbeiten wurden unter anderem von Galerien und Museen in der Schweiz, Deutschland, Italien, Ägypten, der Karibik sowie in Städten wie Paris, Moskau, Chicago, London, Berlin, Istanbul, Los Angeles oder New York gezeigt. Einige seiner Werke wurden unter anderem von folgenden Institutionen aufgenommen: Museum of Modern Art New York, Whitney Museum New York, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Victoria und Albert Museum London, Thurgauer Kunstmuseum, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Kunstmuseum Olten, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, International Museum of Cartoon Art, Graphische Sammlung der ETH Zürich.

Seine Ausbildung in Kunst, Kunstgeschichte und Literaturtheorie hat Brandl an der University of Illinois, Illinois State University, Columbia Pacific University absolviert. Am 20. Mai 2011 hat er an der Universität Zürich mit magna cum laude zum Doktor in der Geschichte der Kunst promoviert.
