Marta Riniker-Radich – Manor Kunstpreis Aarau 2016

Marta Riniker-Radich (b. 1982) is the recipient of the 2016 Manor Art Award Aarau. This award provides the occasion for a solo exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus, for which the artist has created a number of new works. Drawing, filming, modelling and writing, she examines the ambivalent ways we relate to our bodies between the conflicting priorities of wellness trends, beauty cult and health mania.

For several years now, Marta Riniker-Radich has been exploring the medium of drawing. For her solo exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus the artist abandons the iridescent, deserted landscapes for which she is known and, instead, expands into real space by combining a series of new works on paper, objects, video projections and texts into an overarching installation.

In the works created for Aarau, Marta Riniker-Radich reflects on our ambivalent relationship to the body and health. The writings of the American physician John Harvey Kellogg (1852 – 1943) served as the starting point for her artistic research. Known above all as the inventor (along with his brother, Will Keith Kellogg) of the breakfast cereal known as corn flakes, Kellogg ran a sanatorium using holistic treatment methods such as hydrotherapy, phototherapy, diets and massage techniques, methods that are still being debated and widely used – in some cases in more sophisticated forms – to this day.

In precise, vividly coloured drawings of body parts the artist offers anatomical insights, while in her new video pieces she draws on Kellogg’s highly detailed massage instructions. The intimate gestures involved in the actual massaging oscillate between caring and subliminal aggression. The subject of physical violence and disciplining is also inscribed into the objects that are made from everyday material. In addition to these new groups of works, the Geneva-based artist presents text passages and fictional writings of her own.

Drawing, filming, modelling and writing, Marta Riniker-Radich examines the ambivalent ways in which we today relate to our bodies between the conflicting priorities of wellness trends, beauty cult and health mania. Beginning with Kellogg’s teachings, the artist’s critical reflection on the social standardization of the body leads to the issue of control and power, a topic area that has preoccupied her for quite some time.

A Commitment to the Young Swiss Art Scene
One of the most important advancement awards for contemporary art in our country, the Manor Art Award was established in 1982 by Philippe Nordmann to offer a platform for young Swiss artists. A look at the list of award recipients reveals that the Manor Art Award has contributed to the international breakthrough of a whole slew of artists, including Luciano Castelli (1984 Art Award Lucerne), Marie José Burki (1993 Art Award Geneva), Pipilotti Rist (1994 Art Award St. Gallen) and Lena Maria Thüring (2013 Art Award Basel).

Marta Riniker-Radich was born in Bern in 1982. From 2004 until 2008 she attended the Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design (HEAD) in Geneva, which is also where she lives and works today.

Cette récompense fournit à l’Aargauer Kunsthaus l’occasion de lui consacrer une exposition individuelle, pour laquelle l’artiste a créé une série de nouveaux travaux : recourant au dessin, au film, à la conception d’objets et à l’écriture, elle interroge notre rapport ambivalent au corps, entre wellness, culte de la beauté et obsession de la santé.

Marta Riniker-Radich s’intéresse tout particulièrement au dessin depuis plusieurs années. Pour l’exposition personnelle que l’Aargauer Kunsthaus lui consacre, elle s’écarte des paysages déserts, aux couleurs vives et chatoyantes, qui l’ont fait connaître pour se déployer dans l’espace réel, où elle associe une série de nouveaux travaux sur papier, d’objets, de projections vidéo et de textes pour constituer une véritable installation.

Dans les œuvres qu’elle a créées pour Aarau, Marta Riniker-Radich traite de notre rapport ambivalent au corps et à la santé. Sa recherche artistique part des écrits du médecin américain John Harvey Kellogg (1852 – 1943). Surtout connu chez nous pour être l’inventeur des cornflakes (avec son frère Will Keith Kellogg), ce directeur de sanatorium, tenant d’une approche holistique de la santé, a développé et diffusé une multitude de traitements tels qu’hydrothérapie, luminothérapie, régimes et techniques de massage. Des approches qui continuent d’être largement discutées et appliquées, parfois sous une forme renouvelée.

L’artiste propose des images anatomiques dans des dessins précis, aux couleurs intenses, de parties du corps, tandis que ses nouveaux travaux vidéo procèdent des instructions de massage extrêmement détaillées de Kellogg. Les gestes intimes des attouchements exposés balancent entre attention et agression sous-jacente. Le thème de la violence et de la discipline physique s’inscrit aussi dans les objets, fabriqués à partir de matériaux de la vie quotidienne. En complément de ces nouveaux groupes d’œuvres, l’artiste établie à Genève propose des passages de textes et des fictions personnelles.

Partant de l’enseignement de Kellogg, Marta Riniker-Radich interroge notre rapport actuel au corps, entre wellness, culte de la beauté et obsession de la santé en recourant au dessin, au film, à la conception d’objets et à l’écriture. La réflexion qu’elle mène sur la normalisation sociale du corps débouche au final sur la question du contrôle et du pouvoir, un champ thématique qui intéresse l’artiste depuis longtemps.

Un engagement en faveur de la jeune scène artistique suisse Le Prix culturel Manor – l’une des principales initiatives visant à encourager la relève de l’art contemporain dans notre pays – a été créé en 1982 par Philippe Nordmann pour promouvoir de jeunes talents suisses. Il suffit de jeter un coup d’œil sur la liste des lauréats pour voir que le Prix culturel Manor a permis à toute une série d’artistes d’éclore à l’échelle internationale, comme Luciano Castelli (Lucerne, 1984), Marie José Burki (Genève, 1993), Pipilotti Rist (St-Gall, 1994) ou Lena Maria Thüring (Bâle, 2013).

Marta Riniker-Radich est née à Berne en 1982. Elle a étudié de 2004 à 2008 à la Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design (HEAD) de Genève, où elle vit et travaille encore aujourd’hui.

Marta Riniker-Radich (*1982) ist Trägerin des Manor Kunstpreises Aarau 2016. Diese Auszeichnung bietet Anlass für eine Einzelausstellung im Aargauer Kunsthaus, für die die Künstlerin eine Reihe neuer Werke geschaffen hat. Zeichnend, filmend, gestaltend und schreibend befragt sie unser ambivalentes Verhältnis zum Körper im Spannungsfeld von Wellnesstrends, Schönheitskult und Gesundheitswahn.

Marta Riniker-Radich setzt sich seit mehreren Jahren insbesondere mit dem Medium Zeichnung auseinander. Für die Einzelausstellung im Aargauer Kunsthaus löst sich die Künstlerin von den bunt-schillernden, menschenleeren Landschaften, für die sie bekannt ist, und expandiert in den realen Raum, in dem sie eine Serie neuer Papierarbeiten, Objekte, Videoprojektionen und Texte zu einem installativen Ganzen verbindet.

In ihren für Aarau geschaffenen Werken befasst sich Marta Riniker-Radich mit unserem ambivalenten Verhältnis zu Körper und Gesundheit. Ausgangspunkt ihrer künstlerischen Recherche bilden die Schriften des amerikanischen Arztes John Harvey Kellogg (1852 – 1943). Hierzulande vor allem bekannt als Erfinder der Cornflakes (zusammen mit seinem Bruder Will Keith Kellogg), hatte der Sanatoriumsleiter als Vertreter eines holistischen Gesundheitsansatzes eine Vielzahl von Behandlungen, wie Hydrotherapie, Lichttherapie, Diäten und Massagetechniken entwickelt und propagiert. Ansätze, die auch gegenwärtig diskutiert werden und – teilweise in weiterentwickelter Form – eine breite Anwendung finden.

Mit präzisen, farbintensiven Zeichnungen von Körperteilen bietet die Künstlerin anatomische Einblicke, während sie in ihren neuen Videoarbeiten an die äusserst detaillierten Massageanleitungen Kelloggs anknüpft. Die intimen Gesten der ausgeführten Berührungen pendeln zwischen Zuwendung und unterschwelliger Aggression. Das Thema der Gewalt und körperlichen Disziplinierung ist auch den Objekten, die aus Alltagsmaterialien gefertigt sind, eingeschrieben. Ergänzend zu diesen neuen Werkgruppen präsentiert die in Genf lebende Künstlerin Textpassagen und eigene, fiktionale Schriften.

Ausgehend von Kelloggs Lehre befragt Marta Riniker-Radich zeichnend, filmend, gestaltend und schreibend unsere gegenwärtige Beziehung zum Körper, im Spannungsfeld von Wellnesstrends, Schönheitskult und Gesundheitswahn. Die Auseinandersetzung rund um die gesellschaftliche Normierung des Körpers mündet nicht zuletzt in die Frage nach Kontrolle und Macht, ein Themenfeld, das die Künstlerin seit längerem beschäftigt.

Ein Engagement für die junge Schweizer Kunstszene
Der Manor Kunstpreis, einer der wichtigsten Förderpreise des zeitgenössischen Kunstschaffens in unserem Land, wurde 1982 von Philippe Nordmann ins Leben gerufen, um jungen Schweizer Kunstschaffenden eine Plattform zu bieten. Ein Blick auf die Liste der Preisträger/-innen zeigt, dass der Manor Kunstpreis zum internationalen Durchbruch einer ganzen Reihe von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern, wie zum Beispiel Luciano Castelli (Kunstpreis Luzern 1984), Marie José Burki (Kunstpreis Genf 1993), Pipilotti Rist (Kunstpreis St. Gallen 1994) oder Lena Maria Thüring (Kunstpreis Basel 2013), beigetragen hat.

Marta Riniker-Radich ist 1982 in Bern geboren. Sie studierte von 2004 bis 2008 an der Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design (HEAD) in Genf, wo sie heute auch lebt und arbeitet.
