Matt Mullican – Representing the Five Worlds – 50 Years of Work

Mai 36 Galerie is delighted to be hosting an important solo exhibition of the work of American artist Matt Mullican. This tenth solo show at the gallery presents works spanning fifty years of his artistic career, thereby giving a deeper insight into his oeuvre as a whole.

Matt Mullican works in the media of painting, drawing, sculpture and photography as well as video, installation and performance art. In the late 1970s, he was intensely engaged in performances under hypnosis. Then, in the 1980s, he focused his main interest on developing a complex system of signs and symbols. The resulting cosmologically based model remains central to his work.

The concept underlying the model is that every cosmology or world is interconnected and represents a position from which the others can be accessed in a way that also enhances consciousness and the perception of reality. It posits that, by breaking down traditional correlations and opening up new contextual frameworks and systems of order, quotidian paradigms can be dismantled to reveal insights into the relationship between reality and perception.

The five cosmologies are each represented by one colour and one symbol, respectively, The cosmology of the “Elements” is green and embraces the realm of nature and the material essence of things. The cosmology of the “World Unframed” is blue, representing the unframed worlds, the realm of the unconscious, and of automatic action. The cosmology of the “World Framed” is yellow, portraying the consciously-driven thought processes and actions by which the world is perceived, analysed and systematised. The cosmology of the “Sign” represents the realm of symbolism and language. In this black-and-white world, language represents things on the basis of abstract signs. Finally, there is the cosmology of the “Subject”, relating to the world of subjective experience in which both object and sign have ineffable meaning, whereby red, that most vibrant of colours, stands for the world of ideas and feelings.

Matt Mullican (born 1951 in Santa Monica, California; lives and works in Berlin and New York) studied under John Baldessari at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles and held a professorship at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg until 2019. His works are exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide. Over the past 25 years, they have been shown in solo exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, the Kunstmuseum Luzern and, in 2016, at the Kunstmuseum Winterthur. In 2018 the Pirelli Hangar Bicocca in Milan hosted a retrospective exhibition. The first retrospective exhibition of the artist’s oeuvre to be held in Belgium can be seen until October 2020 at the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Hornu. Mai 36 Galerie has represented the artist since 1988.

Die Mai 36 Galerie freut sich, eine gewichtige Einzelausstellung des amerikanischen Künstlers Matt Mullican zu präsentieren. Die zehnte Einzelausstellung in der Galerie zeigt Werke aus 50 Jahren seines künstlerischen Schaffens und ermöglicht damit einen vertieften Einblick in das umfassende Werk.

Matt Mullican arbeitet in den Medien Malerei, Zeichnung, Skulptur und Fotografie, sowie Video, Installationen und Performance. Ende der 1970er Jahre beschäftigte er sich intensiv mit Performances unter Hypnose; in den 1980er Jahren stand die Entwicklung eines komplexen Zeichensystems im Zentrum seines Interesses. Das auf Kosmologien beruhende Modell bildet bis heute den zentralen Gegenstand seiner Arbeit.

Das Modell ist so konzipiert, dass jede Kosmologie bzw. Welt miteinander verknüpft ist und eine Position darstellt, von der aus die anderen Bereiche gelesen werden können und zugleich der Bewusstseins- und Wirklichkeitsaneignung dienen. Indem tradierte Sinnzusammenhänge zergliedert und neue Kontexte und Ordnungen eröffnet werden, können die Paradigmen des Alltags aufgebrochen und die Beziehung zwischen Realität und Wahrnehmung untersucht werden.

Die fünf Kosmologien sind jeweils durch eine Farbe und ein Symbol dargestellt: Die Kosmologie “Elements” ist Grün und umfasst den Bereich der Natur und der materiellen Eigenschaften der Dinge. Die Kosmologie “World Unframed” stellt in Blau die ungerahmte Welt dar, den Bereich unbewusster, automatischer Handlungen. Die Kosmologie “World Framed” in Gelb ist die Ebene bewusst gesteuerter Denkprozesse und Handlungsabläufe, mit denen die Welt wahrgenommen, analysiert und systematisiert wird. Der Bereich der Gedanken und Ideen, der Kunst und der Wissenschaft. Die Kosmologie “Sign” ist der Bereich des Zeichens, der Bereich der Sprache. In dieser schwarz-weißen Welt stellt die Sprache die Dinge auf der Grundlage abstrakter Zeichen dar. Schließlich die Kosmologie “Subject” die Welt der subjektiven Erfahrung, in der Dinge und Zeichen eine unaussprechliche Bedeutung erlangen. Ihr Rot, die lebendigste aller Farben, steht für die Welt der Ideen und Gefühle.

Matt Mullican (*1951 in Santa Monica, Kalifornien, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und New York) studierte bei John Baldessari am California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles und hatte bis 2019 eine Professur an der Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg inne. Seine Werke werden international in Museen und Galerien ausgestellt, in den letzten 25 Jahren waren sie in der Schweiz in Einzelausstellungen im Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Kunstmuseum Luzern und 2016 im Kunstmuseum Winterthur zu sehen. 2018 richtete der Ausstellungsraum Hangar Bicocca in Mailand eine Retrospektive aus; noch bis Oktober 2020 ist die erste Retrospektive des Künstlers in Belgien im Museum of Contemporary Arts in Hornu zu sehen. Die Mai 36 Galerie vertritt den Künstler seit 1988.
