Michael Schnabel – Cages

We will open for the first time ever the cowshed of the farm premiering Michael Schnabel’s “Cages” in Switzerland. After the show the cowshed will be locked again – what a harmonious and yet extraordinary exhibition site for these aesthetic photographs. The old animal enclosures of “Cages” will be presenting their best – architecturally most beautiful – side. What a wonderful contrast to the harsh charm of the cowshed.

Michael Schnabel is a photographer whose creative ambitions are unusually demanding. His work is characterized by the complexity of its subject matter: a veritable world of motifs that he is capable of visualizing and realizing down to the last detail, not only in his landscape, automobile and architectural photographs. The right, ‘decisive’ moment is an essential feature of his work, because it is by means of meticulous preparation, a clear concept and extreme sensitivity that Schnabel literally ‘composes’ his visual worlds. Such painstaking compositions have brought the German photographer a great many national and international awards and prizes, such as AOP Gold, ADC Gold, the PDN Annual Award and the BFF Annual Award, to name but the most important.

Few photographers are as completely at home in the fields of both artistic and applied photography. What all of Schnabel’s work has in common is the way in which it comes into being: painstaking planning and preparation, total concentration, genuine commitment and an impressive sensitivity with respect to the components, time and light. The demands that he makes on himself and his work mean that his images transcend the circumstances that give rise to them. Thanks to his tight focus in preparing for the ‘decisive’ moment, the resulting photographs acquire a truly aesthetic and timeless quality. Michael Schnabel studied photography in Darmstadt. During a prolonged stay in San Francisco, he began combining his passions for landscape and photography: few share his ability to utilize his surroundings to convey his own very personal artistic message and vision. Whether it be deserts, soaring mountain ranges or megacities – the world around him becomes a dramatic stage. It is this ability that international clients such as Audi, BASF, Sony, Siemens, Random House, Marlboro and many agencies value so highly. He is also the member of many international juries, has lectured at several universities and has had group exhibitions and solo shows in Europe, China and the USA. Michael Schnabel lives and works in the South Germany.

Wir öffnen zum ersten Mal überhaupt den Kuhstall und zeigen Michael Schnabels Serie “Cages” als Premiere in der Schweiz. Nach der Ausstellung macht der Kuhstall wieder dicht – ein stimmiger, aber auch ungewöhnlicher Ausstellungsort für diese ästhetischen Fotografien. In “Cages” präsentieren sich Tiergehege von ihrer besten – architektonisch schönsten – Seite. Was für ein grossartiger Kontrast zum herben Charme des Kuhstalls.

Michael Schnabel ist ein Fotograf mit aussergewöhnlichem Anspruch. Sein Markenzeichen sind komplexe Motivwelten, welche er nicht nur bei Landschafts-, Automobil- und Architekturaufnahmen aufs Feinste zu visualisieren weiss. Der richtige Moment ist bei ihm eine Selbstverständlichkeit, mit akribischer Vorbereitung, Vision und Gespür komponiert Schnabel seine Bildwelten. Diese Inszenierungen brachten ihm viele nationale und internationale Auszeichnungen ein, AOP Gold, ADC Gold, PDN Annual Award und BFF Annual Award um nur wenige zu nennen.

Nur wenige Fotografen bewegen sich so souverän in der künstlerischen als auch der angewandten Fotografie: Eine extrem durchdachte Inszenierung, absolute Konzentration, aufrichtiger Enthusiasmus, beeindruckendes Gespür für die Komponenten Zeit und Licht. Mit diesem Anspruch werden die Aufnahmen über das Situative erhoben. Durch das konsequente Hinarbeiten auf den richtigen Moment entstehen Werke von ästhetischem Bestand. Michael Schnabel überrascht immer auf hohem Niveau, er will Bilder, die tatsächlich begeistern. “I am not a snapshot guy”, so Schnabel über sich selbst.

Michael Schnabel studierte Fotografie in Darmstadt. Während seiner Zeit in San Francisco fing er an, die Passionen Landschaft und Fotografie zu vereinen: Er vermag es wie kaum ein Zweiter, die Umwelt zu seinem Botschaftsträger zu machen. Ob Wüsten, Hochgebirge oder Metropolen – einfach jedes Umfeld wird für Schnabel zur Bühne. Auf dieses konzeptionelle Versprechen vertrauen seine Kunden Audi, BASF, Sony, Siemens und etliche Agenturen seit vielen Jahren. Er ist ausserdem in internationalen Jurys vertreten, wurde von mehreren Universitäten zum Lehrbeauftragten berufen und hat Gruppen- und Einzelausstellungen in Europa, China und den USA. Michael Schnabel lebt und arbeitet in Süddeutschland.
