Michel Pérez Pollo – UQBAR

Mai 36 Galerie is delighted to present the works of Cuban painter Michel Pérez Pollo. The gallery hosted his first solo exhibition in 2014, following on from his inclusion in a 2012 group show featuring fellow artists Flavio Garciandía and Raúl Cordero.

Michel Pérez Pollo (*1981 in Manzanillo/Cuba, lives and works in Havana) creates his works in two stages: first, he makes a model of clay and found objects, which serves as a template for his painting in the second stage. Pérez Pollo always works on two levels: a painted area in the lower third of the picture acts as a base for the seemingly three-dimensional form in the foreground. The resulting figurative situations and sculptural portraits have a surreal and poetic effect.

The title “UQBAR”, chosen to highlight this exhibition at Mai 36 Galerie, refers to a short story by the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges: “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius”, in which the author describes an imaginary place, planet or land by the name of Uqbar – a place of mountains and rivers, with its own laws, literature, philosophy and so on. The boundaries between the fictitious world of Uqbar and the real world become blurred in the course of the story, to the point at which no distinction can be made between reality and fiction.

This notion that the world may be made up of a mental matrix is grasped by Michel Pérez Pollo and introduced into his works. The idea consists first and foremost in the mind of the artist and takes on real form in the course of the creative process. For Pérez Pollo, the question of reality is key to the history of painting and its portrayal. This is echoed in his paintings, which imply not only a questioning of material reality, but also a quest to turn thoughts into reality. In this way, the art of Pérez Pollo constructs an imaginary world that exists autonomously. This aspect of his approach is particularly evident in his latest series works, in which he explores the tradition of portraiture. Using fragments of statues or objects in order to avoid subjectivity and preclude recognition, he abstracts forms from portraits, taking them to another level in a new and distinctive form of portrait painting.

Michel Pérez Pollo studied at the Escuela Profesional De Artes Plásticas in Holguín and at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. His works have been shown internationally, and can be seen, for example, from September onwards, in the group exhibition “Kunst x Kuba – Zeitgenössische Positionen seit 1989” at the Ludwig Forum in Aachen.

Die Mai 36 Galerie freut sich, neue Werke des kubanischen Malers Michel Pérez Pollo zu präsentieren. Bereits in der ersten Einzelausstellung 2014 und zuvor 2012 in einer Gruppenausstellung gemeinsam mit den Künstlern Flavio Garciandía und Raúl Cordero wurden seine Arbeiten in den Galerieräumen gezeigt.

Michel Pérez Pollo (*1981 in Manzanillo/Kuba, lebt und arbeitet in Havanna) fertigt seine Werke in zwei Schritten an: zuerst entsteht ein Modell aus Ton und gefundenen Objekten, das als Vorlage für das Gemälde dient, das im zweiten Schritt entsteht. Dabei arbeitet Pérez Pollo immer in zwei Ebenen: eine gemalte Fläche im unteren Drittel des Bildes fungiert als Boden für eine dreidimensional anmutende Form im Bildvordergrund. Dadurch entstehen figurative Situationen und den im Bildraum porträtierten Skulpturen haftet eine surreale und zugleich poetische Wirkung an.

Der Titel “UQBAR”, den die Ausstellung in der Mai 36 Galerie trägt, bezieht sich auf die Erzählung “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius” des argentinischen Schriftstellers Jorge Luis Borges. Darin beschreibt dieser von einer persönlichen Anekdote ausgehend einen imaginären Ort, Planeten oder ein Land namens Uqbar – ein Platz mit Bergen und Flüssen, mit Gesetzen, Literatur, Philosophie, etc.. Die Grenzen zwischen der fiktiven Welt Uqbar und der realen Welt verwischen im Laufe der Erzählung, sodass die scheinbare Wirklichkeit und die Fiktion letztlich nicht mehr zu unterscheiden sind. Diesen Ansatz, dass die Welt womöglich aus einer mentalen Matrix besteht, greift Michel Pérez Pollo auf und setzt sie in seinen Werken um: die Idee besteht zuerst in der Vorstellung des Künstlers und wird durch den künstlerischen Schaffensprozess tatsächlich existent. Die Frage nach der Realität ist für Pérez Pollo in der Geschichte der Malerei und ihrer Darstellung zentral. Dies spiegelt sich in seiner Arbeit wieder, die zum einen den Zweifel an der materiellen Wirklichkeit und zum anderen Gedanken impliziert, die in Form von Werken real werden. Somit etabliert Pérez Pollos Kunst die Errichtung einer imaginären Welt, die durch sich selbst existiert.

Deutlich wird dies in seiner neuen Werkserie, die sich mit der Tradition des Porträts auseinandersetzt. Dabei verwendet er Fragmente von Statuen oder Objekten, um Subjektivität zu vermeiden und Wiedererkennung unmöglich zu machen. Er abstrahiert das Porträt, das auf einer anderen Ebene stattfindet und schafft damit eine eigene Form von Porträtmalerei.

Michel Pérez Pollo studierte an der Escuela Profesional De Artes Plásticas in Holguín sowie am Instituto Superior de Arte in Havanna. Seine Werke werden international ausgestellt und sind beispielsweise ab September in der Gruppenausstellung “Kunst x Kuba – Zeitgenössische Positionen seit 1989” im Ludwig Forum in Aachen zu sehen.
