Mohamed Al Mazrouei – Expressive Emirati Artist

“Some of my artwork explores the themes of labor and struggle juxtaposed with the discovery of ease and comfort. I clearly remember the first time I had an ‘easy’ job, where I did not feel a burden associated with my work. It was when I began working as a photographer. Behind the camera my role and my world changed, filled with relief that a job did not always have to be a struggle. The same thing happened to me when I discovered monotype printing – my art practiced change. I had a strong foundation in writing and painting, two forms of expression that require a great amount of effort on my part. When a friend introduced me to monotype printing, I realized I could express myself with a medium that I find easier and simpler to work with. I have the freedom to experiment with forms and figures, creating mere shadows and silhouettes. These pieces allude to the ephemeral.” (Mohamed Al Mazrouei)

Mohamed Al Mazrouei was already well known as a writer and poet when he started to express himself in another creative way: painting. Since ever then, the artist writes and paints with growing success.

In general, Al Mazrouei’s artwork is figurative. Quite often he focuses on painting portraits. Thick and strong lines, dark eyes and missing body parts are major features of these paintings. The use of color is hardly ever subtle or moderate; instead it is eye catching and distinct. Just like the contours, Al Mazrouei uses color independently from any restrictions or rules. Consequently, the deep and strong impact that the painter creates in doing so appears remarkable and outstanding.

After his mother passed away, Mohamed Al Mazrouei found an image of the Virgin Mary among her belongings. Embracing this inspiration, he surprises the spectator by including Christian motifs and topics in some of his recent paintings. This is noticeable in the group exhibition “Emirati Expressions: Realised” (2013-14, Abu Dhabi), which displayed a number of works by him with Christian themes such as “Jesus and Mary Magdalene” (2013) and “Holy Family Visiting Egypt” (2013). Here Al Mazrouei picks up very common iconographic elements, such as the haloes of the Holy Family or the typical gesture and position of Jesus giving his blessings. However, there are also works, which are rather freely composed, like his version of the last supper (“Primitive Last Supper”, 2012) where the initial understanding comes from the inscriptions.

Speaking about the artist’s style, the figures and objects he paints appear abstract, and frequently are hard to define or to identify. As a consequence, many paintings offer a number of interpretations and associations, which increases the attractiveness of each art piece even more.

If one looks at Mohamed Al Mazrouei’s pictures from a European point of view, an immediate association might be the artistic creations of Jean-Michel Basquiat. An often distorted and almost primitive occurrence of contours and lines is similar in both, Mazrouei’s and Basquiat’s works. Additionally, they share a very expressive and often disharmonious way of painting. Thus, similar impressions develop from their art works, namely strength, agility, expressiveness, and power.

“I have the freedom to experiment with forms and figures, creating mere shadows and silhouettes.” (Mohamed Al Mazrouei) The essence of Mazrouei’s works lies in this quotation. By treating color, form, texture, and content in an experimental and expressive way the artist creates a capturing tension. Repeatedly, he leaves the spectator with unanswered questions and strong emotions and plays with divergences, disharmonies, and contrapositions.

Mohamed Al Mazrouei (*1962, Tanta, Egypt) is an award-winning Emirati writer, artist, cultural commentator, and manager of the UAE Writers’ Union in Abu Dhabi. Additionally, he is in charge of cultural programming for the Abu Dhabi Book Fair.

So far, he has published six collections of poetry, of which most recently 2009’s “For no reason because we are poor”. Other published works include “The Agitation of the Pattern: The Mental Nature Of Apathy”, “But It Is You, Adam”, “On the Meaning of Watching Fire”, “Blood Smell” and “The Lemming”. Al Mazrouei has also written the short story “Who Will Look After the Flies?” The writer’s works have been translated into English, French, German and Spanish.

Among others, his art exhibitions include “Emirati Expressions: Realised” (2013-14, Abu Dhabi), “MinD/Body” (2013, Dubai), “The Maidens of Fair” (2012, Abu Dhabi), and “Flying House” (2008, Dubai). Furthermore, the artist participated in the 30th annual EFAS Exhibition in Sharjah in 2012, for which he won a prize. He has also been awarded the Soua`ad Al Sabah 1st prize at the Al Kharafi, 3rd Annual Exhibition in Kuwait.

On top of that, together with the AB Gallery Lucerne/ Switzerland Mohamed Al Mazrouei had a solo booth at the ART DUBAI 2015.

In April 2015, the artist will participate in an Artist-in-Residence program by the ORYX FOUNDATION Switzerland and AB Gallery Lucerne and will be able to create new works among others. Those will be presented during his first European solo exhibition at the AB Gallery.

Mohamed Al Mazrouei war bereits ein bekannter Poet und Schriftsteller mit einer tiefgreifenden und fundamentierten philosophischen Ausbildung bevor er eine weitere Leidenschaft entdeckte: die Malerei. Seither schreibt und malt der Künstler gleichermassen mit wachsendem Erfolg.

Allgemein sind die Kunstwerke Al Mazroueis in erster Linie figurativ. Sehr oft beschäftigt er sich mit der Porträtmalerei. Dicke und kräftige Linien, dunkle Augen und das Auslassen einzelner Körperteile sind ausschlaggebende Elemente dieser Gemälde. Der Einsatz der Farbe ist niemals moderat oder subtil. Vielmehr tritt sie deutlich und auffallend in Erscheinung. Wie auch im Falle der Konturen befreit Mohamed Al Mazrouei seine Farbe von jeglichen Einschränkungen und lässt sie frei und losgelöst wirken. Es gelingt ihm somit einen starken und bleibenden Eindruck zu schaffen.

Nach dem Tod seiner Mutter fand Mohamed Al Mazrouei eine Abbildung der Jungfrau Maria in ihrem Nachlass. Offen für diese Inspiration und sie wohlwollend empfangend, überrascht der Künstler aus den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten den Betrachter mit der Verwendung von christlichen Motiven und Thematiken in seinen Kunstwerken. 2013-14 zeigte etwa die Gruppenausstellung “Emirati Expressions: Realised” (Abu Dhabi) eine Auswahl von Malereien Mazroueis mit eben solchen christlichen Bezügen, wie zum Beispiel “Jesus and Mary Magdalena” (2013), “Holy Family Visiting Egypt” (2013), oder auch das relativ frei in seiner Komposition erscheinende Werk “Primitive Last Supper” (2012).

Fortlaufend malt Mohamed Al Mazrouei seine Figuren und Objekte abstrakt – mehr noch, oftmals sind jene kaum noch als solche zu erkennen oder spezifisch zu definieren. Demnach ermöglichen viele dieser Arbeiten die unterschiedlichsten Assoziationen und Interpretationen, was die Attraktivität jener Kunstwerke umso mehr steigert.

Betrachtet man die Werke Mohamed Al Mazroueis mit europäisch geprägtem Hintergrund, kommen unweigerlich Assoziationen mit dem Schaffen Jean-Michel Basquiats auf. Der oftmals verzerrte und nahezu primitive Einsatz von Konturen und Linien ist sowohl in Mazroueis als auch in Basquiats Arbeiten gleichermassen anzutreffen. Darüberhinaus haben beide einen sehr ausdruckstarken und oftmals unharmonischen Malstil gemein. Dementsprechend ähnliche Eindrücke resultieren aus deren Arbeiten, wie etwa Expressivität, Belebtheit und Stärke.

Indem er sowohl Farbe, Formgebung und Textur als auch die gewählte Thematik in einer experimentellen und ausdrucksstarken Art und Weise behandelt, kreiert der Künstler eine mitreissende Spannung. Wiederholt lässt er den Betrachter zurück mit offenen Fragen und starken Emotionen. Gezielt und bewusst spielt er mit Divergenzen, Disharmonien und Gegensätzen.

Weitere Arbeiten sind: “The Agitation of the Pattern: The Mental Nature of Apathy”, “But It Is You, Adam”, “On the Meaning of Watching Fire”, “Blood Smell” und “The Lemming”. Ebenso verfasste Al Mazrouei eine Kurzgeschichte mit dem Titel “Who Will Look After the Flies?”. Seine literarischen Texte wurden ins Englische, Französische, Deutsche und Spanische übersetzt.

Die bildnerischen Werke des Künstlers waren mitunter in den Gruppenausstellungen “Emirati Expression: Realised” (2013-14, Abu Dhabi), “MinD/Body” (2013, Dubai), “Maidens of Fair” (2012, Abu Dhabi) und “Flying House” (2008, Dubai) zu sehen. Darüber hinaus wurden Arbeiten von ihm zum Anlass der dreißigsten jährlichen EFAS Ausstellung in Sharjah gezeigt, wo er eine Auszeichnung erhielt. Zudem bekam Mohamed Al Mazrouei den Soua’ad Al Sabah Preis verliehen, der erste Preis der dritten, jährlichen Al Kharafi Ausstellung in Kuwait. 2015 präsentierte ihn die AB Gallery Luzern in einer Einzelausstellung auf der ART DUBAI.

Ferner ist Mohamed Al Mazrouei im April 2015 als Artist-in-Residence in Zusammenarbeit mit der ORYX FOUNDATION und AB Gallery in Luzern zu Gast. Neue, spannende Arbeiten, welche in dieser Zeit entstehen, sind mitunter in der aktuellen Ausstellung zu sehen.
