Mohamed Al Mazrouei – Raw Cooked

AB43 Contemporary is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works on textile and canvas by Emirati artist Mohamed Al Mazrouei.

Al Mazrouei is a multiform personality, comfortably shifting between the various arts, literature,
 poetry, cinema and visual arts. All these elements 
are intertwined and reflected by his various artistic creations, from his paintings and drawings to his poems and novels. His paintings, not unlike his poetry, display naiveté and violence all at once, reflecting deep desires and complex philosophical ideas about the status of culture, especially in the Arab world.

The new cycle of works titled “Raw Cooked” is based on Al Mazrouei’s experience while working at the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi in 1997. It was the Foundation’s aim to follow in the footsteps of the great medieval traveller and scholar Ibn Battuta in order to create new informational and geographical investigations of his extensive travels over a period of thirty years. On a preliminary visit to the Egyptian component of the trip, Al Mazrouei came across the city of Fuwa, located in the upper north of Egypt and famous for its fabric and making of carpet, kilim, and tapestry. During his visit to Fuwa, the idea of transforming some of his artworks into carpet transpired. Inspired by maps and paintings in sizes different from the usual carpet size, and made in traditional loom through corrugation, these works were fabricated over the course of ten years, as Al Mazrouei went back to Egypt frequently.

Al Mazrouei’s works, which are often portraits, are categorised as part of the Neo-Expressionist movement. Thick, strong lines, dark eyes and the omission of body parts are the crucial elements of his paintings. He never uses colour moderately or subtly but always clearly and strikingly. His paintings, not unlike his poetry, display naiveté and violence all at once, reflecting deep desires and complex philosophical ideas about the status of culture, especially in the Arab world.

“I have a strong foundation in writing and painting, two forms of expression that require a great amount of effort on my part. I have the freedom to experiment with forms and figures, creating mere shadows and silhouettes. With my art I allude to the ephemeral,” says Mohamed Al Mazrouei.

AB43 Contemporary freut sich, neue Arbeiten des Emirati Künstlers Mohamed Al Mazrouei in einer Solo-Ausstellung zu zeigen.

Mohamed Al Mazrouei war bereits ein bekannter Poet und Schriftsteller mit einer tiefgreifenden und fundamentierten philosophischen Ausbildung, bevor er eine weitere Leidenschaft entdeckte: die Malerei. Seither schreibt und malt der Künstler gleichermassen mit wachsendem Erfolg.

Der zu sehende Werkzyklus basiert auf einer Erfahrung, die dem Künstler als Kulturdezernent der Cultural Foundation von Abu Dhabi im Jahr 1997 wiederfahren ist. Es galt die Reisen des legendären Ibn Battuta nachzuvollziehen, einem muslimischen Forschungsreisenden des 14. Jahrhunderts, der während seiner fast 25 Jahre andauernden Reise über 120.000 km zurücklegte – weit mehr als der venezianische Händler Marco Polo, der für europäische Ohren etwas geläufiger ist.

Für Mohamed Al Mazrouei lag der primäre Fokus auf den ägyptischen Stationen Ibn Battutas. Die Stadt Fuwa, weit im Norden gelegen, war Teil dieser Route und bekannt für ihre textilen Manufakturen. “I suddenly realized I had to use this and transform some of my artistic work into carpets”, erzählt Al Mazrouei rückblickend. Innerhalb von zehn Jahren und diversen Besuchen seines Heimatlands Ägypten, entstehen seine in der Ausstellung “Raw Cooked” gezeigten Kunstteppiche in der traditionellen Webtechnik mit Schafswolle.

Bewusst setzt Mazrouei seine gewebten Kunstwerke nicht in die sonst sehr grossen Formate für Teppiche oder Gobelins um, sondern bleibt den unmittelbar nahen Proportionen seiner Gemälde treu. Der Mensch – vor allem in expressiven Porträts mit markanten Konturen in denen Farbflächen aufeinandertreffen, aber auch in zeichenhaften Körperstudien in denen das schwarz-weiss angelegte Bild von der Linie dominiert wird – war und bleibt eines seiner bevorzugten Sujets. Genau wie seine Dichtung, vereint seine Kunst Naivität und Gewalt, sie spiegelt tiefliegende Bedürfnisse und komplexe philosophische Ideen über den Stellenwert von Kultur wider, vor allem in Bezug auf die Arabische Welt.

“Das Schreiben und die Malerei sind meine feste Basis, es sind zwei Ausdrucksformen, die von mir grossen Einsatz verlangen. Ich habe die Freiheit mit Formen und Figuren zu experimentieren, bloße Schatten und Silhouetten zu schaffen. Meine Arbeiten sind auch eine Anspielung auf die Vergänglichkeit.” Mohamed Al Mazrouei
