Nancy Brooks Brody

Klaus Gallery is pleased to present a solo project by Nancy Brooks Brody installed in the front room of the gallery.  Consisting of a narrow 18-foot 8-inch length of smooth, flat lead embedded directly into the surface of the wall, this site-specific installation activates the cubic volume of the space. The act of embedding involves extraction, absence, and replacement, processes that reconfigure the way the room is occupied and perceived. Time spent within the piece reveals how the artist recruits the “unused” space, and the viewer inside it, to participate with equal measure. The simplicity of this gesture is deceiving, as the orientation of the line shifts the perceptive weight and visual understanding of an otherwise “empty” room.

A single work on paper hangs just outside the exhibition space: one of Brody’s series of ink drawings on printed images of Merce Cunningham. A drawn line marks the measure of the dancer’s body.

Nancy Brooks Brody was born in New York City, where she lives and works. Her work has recently been included in group exhibitions including “Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon”, New Museum, New York; “arms ache avid aeon: Nancy Brooks Brody / Joy Episalla / Zoe Leonard / Carrie Yamaoka: fierce pussy amplified”, Beeler Gallery, Columbus, Ohio; and “FOUND: Queer Archaeology; Queer Abstraction”, Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, New York; Bortolami Gallery, New York; Brooklyn Museum, New York; FRAC Haute-Normandie, France; White Columns, New York; Artists Space, New York; and The Drawing Center, New York. Solo exhibitions include Fortnight Institute, New York; Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York; and Virgil de Voldere, New York. A fifth chapter of “arms ache avid aeon” will open September 13 at the ICA Philadelphia, curated by Jo-ey Tang and Anthony Elms.
