Now that heaven and earth and wind are still

An Exhibition on Love, Vulnerability and Death.

“Now that heaven and earth and wind are still”… It sounds so poetic, so dreamy, so romantic, the very antithesis of the troubled times in which we now live. The title of the exhibition dates from the Renaissance and is a quote from a sonnet by the fourteenth-century Italian poet Francesco Petrarca. The composer Claudio Monteverdi set the poem to music during the Baroque period, in 1638, and even then, the place where heaven and earth and wind are momentarily still was riven with unrest, violence and war.

Is the view inwards the only one that can bring us peace – then, as now? Should we be trying more often to reconnect with ourselves? If only to be able to process all the disturbing information with which we are constantly bombarded? Should we be devoting ourselves more to nature and to love? And regarding our own vulnerability as a strength rather than a weakness?

Poetry and music in an art show: This new exhibition at the Helmhaus builds on two “old” works by Petrarch and Monteverdi. The works of contemporary art were selected with a view to finding out more about that feeling of calm in the eye of a storm, a feeling that is evidently not new. The works of art capture whole lives in images, transform biographies into art. They show how the experience and memory of weakness can give rise to a sense of strength and resilience for the future. In these troubled times of ours, they gift us a few precious moments of peace, of reflection, of introspection.

Nun, da Himmel und Erde und Winde ruhen

Eine Ausstellung über Verletzlichkeit, Liebe und Tod.

“Nun, da Himmel und Erde und Winde ruhen”: Das klingt so poetisch, verwunschen, verklärt. Ein Gegenbild zu der unruhigen Zeit, in der wir heute leben? Der Titel dieser Ausstellung stammt aus der Zeit der Renaissance, einem Gedicht von Francesco Petrarca aus dem 14. Jahrhundert. Im Barock, im Jahr 1638, hat der Komponist Claudio Monteverdi dieses Gedicht vertont. Der Ort und die Zeit, wo Himmel und Erde und Winde für einen Augenblick ruhen, waren auch damals schon umgeben von Unruhe, Kampf und Krieg.

Ist der Blick nach innen das Einzige, was uns Ruhe bringen kann – damals wie heute? Sollten wir öfter die Verbindung mit uns selbst suchen? Damit wir die beunruhigenden Informationen, die ständig auf uns zukommen, besser verarbeiten können? Sollten wir uns mehr der Natur und der Liebe zuwenden? Und unsere Verletzlichkeit als Stärke sehen statt als Schwäche?

Lyrik und Musik in einer Kunstausstellung: Auf den beiden “alten” Werken von Petrarca und Monteverdi baut die Ausstellung auf. Mit ausgewählten Werken aus der Gegenwartskunst versuchen wir, mehr über dieses Gefühl der “Ruhe im Sturm” herauszufinden. Ein Gefühl, das offenbar nicht neu ist. Die Kunstwerke fassen ganze Leben in Bilder, sie schöpfen aus Biografien Kunst. Sie zeigen, wie aus Erfahrungen und Erinnerungen von Schwäche ein Gefühl von Stärke für die Zukunft entstehen kann. Sie schenken uns in dieser unruhigen Zeit ein paar Momente der Ruhe, des Nachdenkens, der Verinnerlichung.
