Olga Kokcharova & Laurent Güdel & Guests – Solo / Mute / Pan

“Solo / Mute / Pan” is a collaborative exhibition project that brings together for the first time Olga Kokcharova (*1985, CH / RU, Geneva) and Laurent Güdel (*1984, CH, Biel), two sound artists whose common ground is their work with listening and sound spatialization. Using various recording and amplification techniques, Olga and Laurent auscultated the Kunsthaus building during the hot summer 2022. Their respective approaches consider phonography (the writing of sound through microphones) not only as a documentation process, but also as a performative and musical act.

Using microphones, sensors and measuring devices, the two musicians recorded the electromagnetic radiation emanating from the lighting in the exhibition rooms, from control panels, security systems and the payment terminal. They also recorded the creaking of the parquet, the grumbling of the air conditioning and ventilation system, and the evening silence of the empty offices. The special acoustic of the Salle Poma was activated with the help of feedback techniques, horn loudspeakers, a small radio receiver and two pairs of shoes. Olga and Laurent also practiced ‘soundwalking’, recording each other, without making too much noise, as they wandered through the bowels of the building and its immediate surroundings. For example, they crossed the building from the roof to the basement, where the art depository of the Kunsthaus collection is located, via the staircase of the emergency exit. Sometimes they met tenants of the studios, recalcitrant printing devices or Elmo the cat.

Olga and Laurent have developed a sound piece that extends over two floors of the old building. They have assembled the accumulated sound material into a composition that is played on an acousmonium (an orchestra of loudspeakers with different properties) and distributed through the Kunsthaus’s exhibition space. This setup of loudspeaker refers to the field of electroacoustic music while diverting it from its initial purpose. Thus, the two artists operate in the intermediate space between musical composition and sound art. Their approach contradicts the very idea of museum architecture – which consists of a succession of exhibition spaces – by relying on the inherent property of sound not to care about walls. Here everything spills over, leaks and opens up.

Each visitor is encouraged to build their own path through the sonic environment of the installation, to find their own rhythm, their own places to stop or their ideal listening position. These choices lead to a unique listening experience. Thus, each person becomes a co-creator of the sound composition.

As part of the exhibition, Olga and Laurent are organising four residencies of artists working at the intersection of music and sound art. During a three-day residency at the Kunsthaus, these six guests* work on, intervene in or expand a part of the sound system installed for the exhibition. Each residency finishes with a performance and leaves a noticeable trace in the composition created by Olga and Laurent.

“Solo / Mute / Pan” est un projet d’exposition qui réunit Olga Kokcharova (*1985, CH / RU, Genève) et Laurent Güdel (*1984, CH, Bienne), deux artistes qui s’associent pour la première fois et qui ont pour point commun de travailler avec l’écoute et des dispositifs de spatialisation sonore. Grâce à diverses techniques d’enregistrement et d’amplification, Olga et Laurent se sont livré·e·s à une auscultation du bâtiment du Centre d’art Pasquart lors de la canicule de l’été 2022. Dans leurs démarches respectives, la phonographie (écriture du son via des microphones) est envisagée non pas seulement comme un processus de documentation, mais également en tant que geste performatif et musical.

Avec leurs microphones, senseurs et capteurs, les deux musicien·ne·s ont enregistré les radiations électromagnétiques générées par l’éclairage des espaces d’exposition, les tableaux électriques, les systèmes de sécurité et le terminal de paiement. Les craquements des parquets, les grondements des systèmes de climatisation et d’aération ainsi que le calme des bureaux désertés le soir ont également été captés. L’acoustique étrange de la Salle Poma a été activée grâce à des techniques de feedback, des haut-parleurs en forme de trompette, un petit récepteur radio et deux paires de chaussures. Olga et Laurent ont également pratiqué le ‘soundwalk’, s’enregistrant mutuellement, sans faire trop de bruit, en déambulant dans les entrailles du bâtiment et son voisinage immédiat. En empruntant les escaliers de secours, ils ont marché du toit au sous-sol, où se trouve le dépôt des œuvres d’art de la Collection Centre d’art Pasquart. Ils sont parfois tombés sur les locataires des ateliers, l’imprimante récalcitrante et le chat Elmo.

Chaque visiteuse et visiteur est invité·e à construire son propre parcours à travers l’environnement sonore de l’installation, trouver son rythme de déambulation, ses lieux d’arrêt ou sa posture d’écoute idéale. Ces choix induisent une expérience d’écoute unique. Ainsi, chaque personne devient elle-même co-créateur·trice de la composition sonore.

Au cours de l’exposition, Olga et Laurent mettent en place quatre courtes résidences d’artistes qui œuvrent à l’intersection de la musique et des arts sonores. Lors de leurs séjours respectifs de trois jours au Centre d’art, ces six invité·e·s* travailleront sur une partie du dispositif sonore installé pour l’exposition, interviendront dessus et complèteront la proposition sonore. Chaque résidence se terminera par une performance et laissera une trace perceptible dans la composition proposée par Olga et Laurent.

L’exposition sera documentée sous forme de cassette audio.

“Solo / Mute / Pan” ist ein kollaboratives Ausstellungsprojekt, das erstmals Olga Kokcharova (*1985, CH / RU, Genf) und Laurent Güdel (*1984, CH, Biel) zusammenbringt, zwei Klangkünstler*innen, deren Gemeinsamkeit sich in der Arbeit mit dem Hören und der räumlichen Klanggestaltung findet. Mithilfe verschiedener Aufnahme- und Verstärkungstechniken haben Olga und Laurent das Kunsthaus-Gebäude im hitzigen Sommer 2022 abgehorcht. Ihre jeweiligen Herangehensweisen erachten die Phonografie (das Schreiben von Ton über Mikrofone) nicht nur als Dokumentationsprozess, sondern auch als performativer und musikalischer Akt.

Olga und Laurent haben ein Klangstück entwickelt, das sich über zwei Stockwerke des Altbaus erstreckt. Das angesammelte Klangmaterial haben sie zu einer Komposition zusammengefügt, die auf einem Akusmonium (Orchester aus Lautsprechern mit sehr unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften) gespielt wird und in den Ausstellungsraum des Kunsthauses szenografisch verteilt ist. Indem sie dieses Dispositiv dem Bereich der elektroakustischen Musik entlehnen und zweckentfremden, bewegen sich die beiden Kunstschaffenden im Zwischenraum von musikalischer Komposition und Klangkunst. Ihre Herangehensweise widerspricht der eigentlichen Idee musealer Architektur – die aus einer Aneinanderreihung von Ausstellungsräumen besteht – indem sie sich auf die inhärente Eigenschaft des Klangs stützt, sich nicht um Wände zu scheren. Hier läuft alles über, entweicht und öffnet sich.

Jede*r Besucher*in wird ermutigt, sich einen eigenen Weg durch die Klanglandschaft der Installation zu bahnen, den eigenen Rhythmus, die eigenen Orte zum Verweilen oder die ideale Hörposition zu finden. Diese Wahlmöglichkeiten erlauben ein einzigartiges Hörerlebnis. So wird jede Person die Klangkomposition mitgestalten.

Als Teil der Ausstellung organisieren Olga und Laurent vier Residenzen von Kunstschaffenden, die sich an der Schnittstelle von Musik und Klangkunst bewegen. Während dem jeweils dreitägigen Aufenthalt im Kunsthaus arbeiten diese sechs Gäste* an einer Partie der für die Ausstellung installierten Klangvorrichtung, intervenieren oder erweitern diese. Jede Residenz endet mit einer Performance und hinterlässt eine wahrnehmbare Spur in der von Olga und Laurent erschaffenen Komposition.

Die Ausstellung wird als Audiokassette dokumentiert.
