Oliver Lee Jackson - Vibrato

Rena Bransten Gallery is pleased to present “Vibrato”, a selection of paintings and prints from celebrated artist Oliver Lee Jackson. This exhibition runs concurrently with a solo exhibition of his work at the Saint Louis Art Museum. Originally from Saint Louis, Jackson has lived and work in Oakland, CA since 1982.

Throughout a staggeringly prolific career spanning decades, Oliver Lee Jackson has presented a powerful body of artworks which challenge and entice – electrifying in both their force and tenderness.

Jackson’s paintings express a multitude of layers and elements, and it can be daunting to pick a point of entry. Yet the images have a way of engulfing the senses – the longer time spent looking, the more we attune to the language of the painting and the balance between abstraction and figuration. A willingness to stand before the work as it reveals itself through the elements enmeshed in the field is the only necessary tool.

“As with most work by Jackson, or even more than most, it is possible to trace various figural suggestions and pathways through his work. The overall effect, however, is one of great forces and movements, the sharpest possible contrasts and the most abrupt shifts of viewpoint, all held or conducted in unlikely balance.”

Harry Cooper, Senior Curator of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art. From the essay “Parallel Processing”, Saint Louis Art Museum exhibition catalog (forthcoming)

Born in 1935 in Saint Louis, Missouri, Oliver Lee Jackson’s work has been exhibited extensively over the past several decades, and can be found in the permanent collections of The National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Blanton Museum, Austin; Contemporary Art Museum, Chicago; Yale University Art Gallery; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; The Oakland Museum; San Jose Museum of Art, and many other public and private collections across the U.S. A solo exhibition of sculptures and mixed media works opens at the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art in Napa, CA in November of 2021.
