Panel Discussion: Qwaypurlake – Curated by Simon Morrissey

 

Hauser & Wirth Somerset is pleased to host a panel discussion on the occasion of the group exhibition, ‘Qwaypurlake’. Artistic Director of Tate St Ives, Sam Thorne, will chair the afternoon’s discussion, alongside the exhibition’s curator, Simon Morrissey and participating artists Daphne Wright, Ian McKeever and Marie Toseland. The group will discuss ideas and thoughts generated by the exhibition, as well as sharing an insight into their own individual working practice and unique experience within the art world.

Ian McKeever began work as an artist in 1969 after studying English Literature. His early work grew out of a conceptual interest in landscape, painting and photography, which later developed into a concern primarily with the human body and architectural structures. At the same time the quality of light and its presence in the painting became increasingly important.

Amongst his many museum exhibitions, include Kunst-Station Sankt Peter, Cologne, 2014; Josef Albers Museum, Bottrop, 2012; Sønderjylland Kunstmuseum, 2011 and Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2010. He has received numerous awards including the prestigious DAAD scholarship in Berlin 1989/90 and was elected a Royal Academician in 2003. His work is represented in leading international public collections, including Tate, British Museum, Royal Academy of Arts, London and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, to name but a few.

Simon Morrissey is a curator and director of “Foreground”, a commissioning arts organisation he founded with Tabitha Clayson in 2007. In 2008 he established WORKS|PROJECTS, which represents a distinctive stable of British artists and initiates projects that develop critical and commercial platforms for emerging artists in the region. Morrissey is also a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of the West of England.

Sam Thorne is Artistic Director of Tate St Ives. He is a contributing editor of Frieze magazine, a visiting tutor at the Royal Academy of Art and a co-founder of Open School East, a free-to-attend study programme in East London. His book, ‘School: Conversations on Self-Organised Education’, will be published by Sternberg Press in May 2016.

Marie Toseland is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Art and Open School East, after completing a BA Fine Art & Visual Culture at U.W.E Bristol. Toseland has recently completed a residency at Tate St Ives as well as exhibiting extensively throughout the UK and featuring works in a number of publications. Working across a variety of media, including sculpture, photography and writing, Toseland explores themes such as the contrasting notions of stillness and spectacle, tangibility and transience.

Daphne Wright is an artist known for her unsettling yet poignant sculptural installations. Using a wide range of materials – plaster, tinfoil, video, printmaking, found objects and performance – she creates worlds that are beautiful and rather eerie which feel like the threshold to somewhere new. Wright has exhibited nationally and internationally, with works held in permanent collections at the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin and Towner Art Gallery, Sussex. Daphne Wright is represented by Frith Street Gallery, London.
