Paul Cupido – Éphémère

Bildhalle is happy to announce Paul Cupido’s first solo exhibition in May 2019 in Zurich, while also proudly presenting the artist’s work at Photo London and Photo Basel. The exhibition is presented in conjuction with the release of two new photo books by Paul Cupido (Edition Bildhalle): Éphémère & Continuum.

The artist will be present at the opening reception in Zurich and will be available to sign copies of the book.

“Wherever his worldwide photographic explorations take him, Paul Cupido brings to bear his childhood experience of growing up on an island on his images and the way he prefers to talk about them. The heartbeat of life on the island is constituted by the rhythm of the seasons, the moon, and the movement of the tides. The beauty of such strong environmental bonds, paired with a sense of the fragility of life, gave shape to Paul’s later engagement with photography and image-making.

When I first met Paul Cupido in 2017, he was just about to graduate from the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam, with a consummate photobook titled “Searching for Mu” that he self-published to great acclaim shortly thereafter. The electrifying images and equally hallucinating edit mirrored the new journey 
Cupido had embarked upon, a way of traveling, meaning not only a physical exploration of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, but above all a spiritual journey to the inner self.

Later travels brought him to more tropical zones, to the southernmost Japanese islands and to the Brazilian Amazon. 
Whereas the principle of Mu – a key term in Eastern philosophy that is difficult to translate, but pertaining to the letting go of ego, to not having, to a void that holds endless potential – is still important, in recent series the emphasis has shifted to éphémère. Borrowing this notion from the artist Charlotte Davies and her immersive, interactive visual/aural artwork of the same name (1998), Cupido stresses the fleetingness of existence in the process of genesis, metamorphosis and disappearance, as well as focuses on the symbolic correspondences between earth and body. The ephemeral is also expressed through the moonlit landscapes and the dusk, that transitional zone in between the harsh light of day and the depths of the night. Coincidentally, ‘ephemerae’ refers to temporary printed matter. Cupido’s well-crafted prints, however, promise anything but short-livedness, yet invite us to meditate on the fragility of life, the interconnectedness of humans and non-humans, and the silence that is at the heart of every word and image.”

Paul Cupido was born on a small Dutch Island called Terschelling in 1972. In 2017, Cupido graduated cum laude from the Fotoacademie Amsterdam with the first installment of his ongoing multimedia project “Searching for Mu”. He was awarded an artist’s residency at the Belfast Photo Festival 2017 and the Hariban Jurors’ Choice Award in Japan. GUP Magazine included his work in their “New Dutch Talent” 2018 issue. He is currently working on two new books, one including his work from Japan with graphic designer Aiko Wakabayashi and one featuring his work from the Amazon with publisher and graphic designer Esther Krop. Bildhalle will open Cupido’s first solo exhibition in May 2017, the same month he will be exhibited at Photo London with the artist duo Albarrán Cabrera. Another exhibition is planed at Photo Basel in June 2019. Paul Cupido lives and works in Amsterdam.

Anlässlich der ersten Einzelausstellung des aufstrebenden holländischen Künstlers Paul Cupido in der Schweiz, erscheint der gleichnamige Bildband sowie das exklusive und limitierte Artist Book “Continuum” – beide von der Edition Bildhalle herausgegeben.

Im Mai und Juni 2019 wird Paul Cupido’s Werk an der Photo London und an der Photo Basel zu sehen sein.

Paul Cupido ist 1977 auf einer kleinen holländischen Insel namens Terschelling geboren. Die Bewohner lebten weitgehend von dem, was die Natur zu bieten hatte: von einheimischen Lebensmitteln und Dingen, die an Land gespült wurden. Die tiefe Naturverbundenheit der Bevölkerung und ein Leben, das stark vom Rhythmus der Jahreszeiten, der Mondphasen und der Gezeiten beeinflusst war, prägen Paul Cupido bis heute auch in seiner künstlerischen Arbeit.

Cupido ist davon überzeugt, dass die Existenz des Menschen eng mit der Natur verwoben ist. “Ein wichtiger Aspekt in meiner Arbeit ist das, was ich Aufschichtung von Erinnerungen nenne. Eine glückliche Kindheit, das Erwachen der Jugend, Freundschaften, die erste Liebe, Wachstum und schliesslich der Tod: Ereignisse im Leben hinterlassen Spuren in unserem Gedächtnis, die irgendwann verblassen und zuweilen ganz verschwinden. Die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens ist allgegenwärtig. Die Verbundenheit des Menschen mit der Natur kann tröstlich sein, und dies möchte ich mit meinen Bildern sichtbar machen.”

Paul Cupidos weltweite fotografischen Erkundungen führten ihn kurz nach Abschluss der Fotoakademie zunächst nach Japan, auf die nordjapanische Insel Hokkaido. Später dann in die tropischen Zonen des brasilianischen Amazonas. Doch jede tatsächliche Erkundung eines Ortes mittels der Fotografie ist bei Cupido zugleich eine spirituelle Reise ins Innere. Seine elektrisierende Bildsprache und halluzinierenden Bildsequenzen spiegeln dies wider.

“Ephémère” ist der Titel dieser Ausstellung und auch von Cupidos erster Monografie. Zugleich ist es ein Schlüsselbegriff in seinem künstlerischen Werk. In der Botanik ist “ephemer” die Eigenschaft eines Organismus, der “nur einen Tag lebt”, im übertragenen Sinne jedoch beschreibt das Wort den Prozess der Entstehung, der Verwandlung und des Verschwindens. Eine existenzielle Flüchtigkeit also, die Cupidos fragilen Bilder von Pflanzen, Menschen und Landschaften durchdringt. Seine Bilder scheinen im Moment des Übergangs von hellem Tageslicht zur schwarzen Nacht entstanden zu sein. In einer Zone ohne Zeit und geografische Verortung, aber voller Zauber, melancholischer Schönheit und tiefer poetischer Kraft.

Er schloss sein Studium mit cum laude an der Fotoacademie Amsterdam 2017 mit dem Multimedia-Projekt “Searching for Mu” ab. Im gleichen Jahr wurde er beim Belfast Photo Festival mit einem Künstleraufenthalt und in Japan mit der Hariban Jurors’ Choice ausgezeichnet. Das GUP-Magazin publizierte seine Arbeit in ihrer Ausgabe “New Dutch Talent 2018”.

Im Mai 2019 zeigt die Bildhalle Cupidos erste Einzelausstellung, zeitgleich mit einer Doppelausstellung (mit Albarrán Cabrera) an der Photo London. Im Juni 2019 folgt eine Ausstellung seiner Arbeiten an der Photo Basel. Cupido arbeitet zur Zeit an zwei neuen Büchern: mit dem Designer Akiko Wakabayashi an einem Buch über seine Japan-Serie, mit der Verlegerin und Grafikerin Esther Krop an einer Publikation über seine neuste Arbeit “Amazonia”. Cupido lebt mit seiner Familie in Amsterdam.
