Peter Mathis (1961) lives and works in Hohenems (A). Since 2009 he has been specialising in large sized landscape photography. His photography work is exhibited in international private and public collections.
As the only Austrian photographer so far, he received the well-respected award of “Hasselblad Master” (2007). In 2008 he was awarded the “Master of European Photography”.
Peter Mathis’ landscape photography catapults us into another world. The experienced mountaineer often waits for the perfect moment for several days; when light, weather and the scenery exactly reflect the motif that he has been creating in his head. The landscape appears before us in a familiar way and yet his pictures always present something unknown, something we did not realise before. In doing so, he does not simply represent the mountains, lakes and nature, but illustrates their dignity and beauty.
About his approach he states: “For almost forty years I have been going to the mountains, but now as a photographer, I see things differently. I consciously attempt to take a step back. Only with distance one can really appreciate the true dimension of the mountains.”

Peter Mathis (1961) lebt und arbeitet in Hohenems (A). Seit 2009 hat er sich auf großformatige Landschaftsfotografie spezialisiert. Seine Fotoarbeiten befinden sich in internationalen privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen.
Als bisher einziger österreichischer Fotograf erhielt er die renommierte Auszeichnung “Hasselblad Master” (2007). Im Jahr 2008 erhielt er den “Master of European Photography” verliehen.
Peter Mathis Landschaftsfotografien katapultieren uns in eine andere Welt. Der erfahrene Bergsteiger wartet oft tagelang auf den genau richtigen Moment, in dem das Licht, das Wetter und der Bildausschnitt genau das wiederspiegeln, was er als Motiv bereits im Kopf trägt. Die Landschaft taucht vor uns auf, bekannt und doch immer haben seine Bilder etwas Unbekanntes, was wir zuvor noch nicht kannten. Er bildet dabei die Berge, die Seen und die Natur nicht einfach nur ab, sondern zeigt ihre Erhabenheit und Schönheit.
Über seine Herangehensweise sagt er: “Seit fast vierzig Jahren gehe ich in die Berge, aber jetzt, als Fotograf, sehe ich die Dinge anders. Ich versuche bewusst einen Schritt zurück zu machen. Nur mit Abstand kann man die wahre Dimension der Berge wirklich erkennen.”
