René Burri – Kosmopolit

For the season opening 2017/18, Bildhalle is delighted to be able to announce a solo exhibition by one of Switzerland’s most revered and famous photographers. In close cooperation with his family, this will be the first solo show since René Burri’s passing in 2014 and is meant to commemorate this “Humanist with Camera”.

René Burri brought us now-famous icons of 20th Century’s history of photography. As an extensively traveling MAGNUM photographer, he also took us to all corners of the world through his vivid photo reportages. His photographs, always interested in the issues, are engaged, complex and empathetic. René Burri didn’t just want to document the world, he also wanted to change it with his images.

The exhibition at Bildhalle will present an impressive selection of his signed gelatin silver and c-prints, emphasizing his formal and dynamic visual language while also providing one or the other surprise.

René Burri studied at the School of Applied Arts in his native city of Zurich, Switzerland. From 1953 to 1955 he worked as a documentary film-maker and began to use a Leica while doing his military service.

Burri became an associate of Magnum in 1955 and received international attention for one of his first reportages, on deaf-mute children, “Touch of Music for the Deaf”, published in Life magazine.

In 1956 he traveled throughout Europe and the Middle East, and then went to Latin America, where he made a series on the gauchos that was published by “Du” magazine in 1959. It was also for this Swiss periodical that he photographed artists such as Picasso, Giacometti and Le Corbusier. He became a full member of Magnum in 1959, and started work on his book “Die Deutschen”, published in Switzerland in 1962, and by Robert Delpire the following year with the title “Les Allemands”. In 1963, while working in Cuba, he photographed Ernesto ‘Che‘ Guevara during an interview by an American journalist. His images of the famous revolutionary with his cigar appeared around the world. Burri participated in the creation of Magnum Films in 1965, and afterwards spent six months in China, where he made the film “The Two Faces of China” produced by the BBC. He opened the Magnum Gallery in Paris in 1962, while continuing his activities as a photographer; at the same time he made collages and drawings.

In 1998 Burri won the Dr Erich Salomon Prize from the German Association of Photography. A big retrospective of his work was held in 2004-2005 at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris and toured many other European museums. René Burri lived and worked in Zurich and Paris. René Burri passed away at the age of 81 on October, 2014.

In 2013 René Burri has founded his own foundation that comprises the entity of his oeuvre and is archived by the Musée d’Elyseée in Lausanne.

Die Bildhalle freut sich, in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Familie Burri für den Saisonauftakt 2017/18 die erste Einzelausstellung seit dem Tod des wohl bekanntesten und verehrtesten Schweizer Fotografen ankündigen zu dürfen und somit diesem “Humanisten mit Kamera” gebührend zu gedenken.

René Burri schuf Ikonen der Fotografiegeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts und entführte uns als viel reisender MAGNUM-Fotograf mit seinen eindringlichen Bildreportagen in alle Winkel dieser Welt. Seine fotografischen Arbeiten waren dabei immer an der Sache interessiert, engagiert, vielschichtig und emphatisch. Er wollte die Welt nicht nur dokumentieren, er wollte sie mit seinen Bildern auch verändern. Die Ausstellung in der Bildhalle wird eine eindrückliche Auswahl seiner signierten Schwarzweiss- und Farbabzüge zeigen, die sowohl das Gestalterische als auch das Dynamische in seiner Bildsprache herausarbeitet und dabei durchaus auch noch Überraschendes bereithält.

“Die Welt von René Burri ist die Welt in ihrer Ausbreitung, in ihren unendlichen Facetten, in seinen Abertausenden von Negativen. Membra disiecta, also verstreute Dinge, die zusammen gehören durch den Blick ihres Urhebers. René Burris Welt ist unfassbar gross, aber immer konkret formuliert. Man hat von “Engagierter Fotografie” gesprochen, concerned photography. Mir kam in den Sinn, dass im Rückblick auf eine ganze Epoche und den Zeugen, der sie formuliert hat, so und nicht anders formuliert, ein neuer Begriff fällig würde: Essentielle Fotografie. Das ist es doch, was wir als René Burris Erben vor uns haben: eine Essenz hervorragender Gegenstände des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, aufgehoben in einem seiner Leitmedien, der analogen Fotografie. Aufgehoben mithin in einem besonders schönen Zustand.”

René Burri studierte an der Kunstgewerbeschule in seiner Heimatstadt Zürich, Schweiz. Von 1953 bis 1955 arbeitete er als Dokumentarfilmemacher und machte während des Militärdienstes seine ersten Bilder mit einer Leica. 1955 wurde er Teil der Fotoagentur MAGNUM und machte die Welt mit einer seiner ersten Reportagen über taubstumme Kinder, publiziert im Life Magazin, auf sich aufmerksam.

Der Dr. Erich Salomon Preis der Deutschen Fotografiestiftung 1998 ging an René Burri und eine grosse Retrospektive, die 2004-2005 in der Maison Européenne in Paris startete, tourte durch mehrere europäische Museen. Er lebte und arbeitete in Zürich und Paris, wo er 2014, im Alter von 81 Jahren, starb.
