Rosario Vicidomini combines tranquility and expressionism while utilizing a monochromatic palette. These two seemingly opposite poles of his personality come alive simultaneously throughout his work – the passive and active, introverted and extroverted, however labeled, are all dependent upon each other. In painting this combination is very rare; Francis Bacon was one of the first to bring these notions to contemporary art: a monochromatic layer forms the background for an eruption of strong, sometimes violent and aggressive expression. Rosario Vicidomini does not struggle to depict reality when he paints; he does not want to depict anything. The stones and vessels are only forms for expression, so that the expressive element does not aimlessly wander about the canvas. By giving it shape, the message truly unfolds. Vicidomini’s paintings are quiet revelations; he aims for transparency but stays mysterious. His unusual approach to contemporary painting undoubtedly catches the viewer’s eye.
Rosario Vicidomini was born 1986 in Nocera Inferiore, Italy. He lives and works in Hamburg, Germany

Rosario Vicidomini verbindet Stille und Expressivität, Monochromie und expressive Malerei, zwei scheinbar gegensätzlichen Seiten einer Persönlichkeit, durch die sie aber erst lebendig wird. Das Passive und das Aktive, das In-Sich-Zurückziehen und das Aus-Sich-Herausgehen, wie immer man es nennen mag, gehören notwendig zusammen. In der Malerei aber gibt es die Kombination nur selten. Francis Bacon hat sie vollendet in die zeitgenössische Kunst eingeführt: Eine monochrome Fläche bildet den Hintergrund für den Ausbruch starker, manchmal gewaltsamer, aggressiver Expressivität. Rosario Vicidomini hat nicht den Menschen im Sinn, wenn er malt und er will nichts darstellen. Die Steine und Gefäße sind nur Formen für das Expressive, es soll nicht formlos, ziellos auf der Leinwand herumirren, sondern gerade dadurch, dass er ihm eine Form gibt, kann es sich entfalten. Vicidomini verhüllt und enthüllt, strebt nach Transparenz und bleibt doch geheimnisvoll. Seine Bilder fallen ins Auge und sie sind ungewöhnlich in der aktuellen zeitgenössischen Malerei.
