Spiegelgasse (Mirror Alley)

Referring to the address of Cabaret Voltaire – the famous birthplace of Dada in Zurich, Switzerland – ‘Spiegelgasse (Mirror Alley)’ is a group exhibition that presents works by Swiss artists from 1940 to the present day. Taking historiographical cues from the literal translation of the street name, the exhibition tracks art history not as an evolutionary process, but rather as a hall of mirrors in which artists’ practices encounter, reflect, fragment, and recombine through time. The artists featured include Urs Fischer, Fischli / Weiss, Alberto Giacometti, Manon, Fabian Marti, Jill Mulleady, Meret Oppenheim, Pipilotti Rist, Emanuel Rossetti, Daniel Spoerri, Vivian Suter, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, André Thomkins, Jean Tinguely and Andro Wekua.

The exhibition is an inquiry into the legacies of Dadaist and Surrealist Art and Zurich, the city where artists like Hugo Ball and Sophie Taeuber-Arp shared company with modernist writer James Joyce. As the curator Gianni Jetzer explains, ‘the milieu of an overly rationalised Swiss society proved a breeding ground for an avant-garde defined by humour, nonsense, and subjective realities: qualities seen in the reflections and refractions of Swiss art to this very day.’
