Stephanie Hirsch - Awakening

Continuing her use of beads, sequins and embroidery to create canvases that echo her personal journeys, Stephanie Hirsch has delivered her most resolute exhibition to date. “Awakening” is Hirsch’s third solo exhibition with Lyons Wier Gallery and clearly one that has synthesized elements from her earlier shows. “Awakening” also introduces a new element in her art-making trek, the shaped canvas. “Awakening” exclusively uses the shape of the butterfly and Hirsch clearly utilizes the butterfly to metaphorically represent a personal transformation.

Artists throughout history have included butterfly imagery in their compositions for a myriad of reasons. Many contemporary artists continue to use the butterfly iconographically, metaphorically and literally as their primary lexicon. Hirsch is now a part of this rich history of practitioners who have embraced the butterfly image and has seamlessly incorporated it into her art making process.

Stephanie Hirsch will be the first to tell you that she is experiencing a personal metamorphosis. Faced with unforeseen life events, Hirsch is making art that tells her life’s journey. By combining her new imagery with her continued use of mantras, “Awakening” delivers a profoundly personal story of rebirth and renewal, doors closing and opening, and the glass being half-full. And because of its immense personal nature, “Awakening” skillfully skates the sentimental trappings of pop-psychology and rests assuredly amongst the roster of artists that use text as an essential compositional element as well as to communicate a personal message.

Stephanie Hirsch has shown in exhibitions in New York, the Hamptons, Miami, San Francisco and Los Angeles. She was a featured artist in Miami Design District’s Art Walk (2012) and showcased in the Mercedes Benz VIP lounge at Lincoln Center during New York Fashion Week (2012). Hirsch was among 30 artists commissioned to create a unique commemorative crown for display in Harrods (London) in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (2012). Hirsch recently completed her artist residency at the P3 Studio at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, curated in partnership with the non-profit Art Production Fund, where she presented “#Lightseeker,” an aesthetically-charged interactive installation. Stephanie Hirsch lives and works in New York City.
