Tamara Zahaykevich - Following Frames

Jeff Bailey Gallery is pleased to present “Tamara Zahaykevich: Following Frames”, an exhibition of recent constructions.

At play with the irrepressible stuff of the world that reveals itself as the basis for something ever more complex, Zahaykevich’s constructions are a study in subliminal majesty. The kind of insouciant joy found in after school arts and crafts limns pieces like Blush Complex, but her material intelligence shines through the quirks. These are works whose articulated exoskeletons are playgrounds for painterly technique. They are exuberant but delicate, resolute and tender.

Several of the works in the exhibition seem to strive for distance from the wall, like outgrowths. The smallest could be a Lilliputian shelf, but for its attached thicket of strings. Made with mostly foam core and paint, they range from six to twenty inches in height, while the floor piece is approximately three-quarter body size.

One could loosely describe Zahaykevich’s work as paintings on top of sculptures. Indeed, it is this very hybridity that makes her work unique, and calls into question not only the categorization of artworks, but also the structure of their display. The exhibition title, Following Frames, echoes these concerns: an implied frame or edge as a container of pictorial space yielding to other realms of discovery.

This is Zahaykevich’s (born 1971) first solo exhibition at the gallery. Her work was included in the gallery’s group exhibition, “Slow Hunch”, in 2013. Other solo exhibitions include KANSAS, New York (2015 and 2011) and Bellwether Gallery, New York among others. Her work has been featured in many group exhibitions, at venues such as Tibor de Nagy Gallery and Feature Inc. She is a recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, Marie Walsh Sharpe Studio Fellowship and has been an artist in residence at the MacDowell Colony and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She lives and works in New York.
