Thomas Kern – A Drug Free Land & Lessons from the Sidewalk

Thomas Kern creates “A Drug Free Land” between 2002 and 2009. On his way through everyday life in rural America he finds striking situations. His images condense the unspectacular and point beyond themselves to the state of the nation. They tell of the country’s shock after 9/11, which still continues today, and of the breaking American Dream. In the fleeting moment the big issues flash, loneliness and poverty, patriotism and racism, love and violence.

“Lessons from the Sidewalk” is also about everyday life stories, whose protagonists are invisible for once. The chairs that Kern meets in the streets of Cairo are witnesses and objects that have become memories. He approaches them with his camera as if they were people to be portrayed.

Thomas Kern, born 1965 in Brugg, trained as a photographer in Zurich. From 1989 as a freelance photojournalist on the road in crisis areas. 1990 co-founder of the Swiss photo agency Lookat Photos. 1998 – 2006 freelance photographer in San Francisco. 2006 and 2014 awarded with a Swiss Press Award. In 2016 the Fotostiftung Schweiz in Winterthur shows his big photo essay about Haiti.

Thomas Kerns Arbeit “A Drug Free Land” entsteht zwischen 2002 und 2009. Der Fotograf findet unterwegs durch den Alltag des ländlichen Amerika eindringliche Situationen. Seine Bilder verdichten das Unspektakuläre und verweisen über sich hinaus auf die Lage der Nation. Sie erzählen von der Erschütterung des Landes nach 9/11, die bis heute nachwirkt, und vom zerbrechenden American Dream. Im flüchtigen Augenblick blitzen die grossen Themen auf, Einsamkeit und Armut, Patriotismus und Rassismus, Liebe und Gewalt.

“Lessons from the Sidewalk” handelt von Lebensgeschichten, deren Protagonisten für einmal unsichtbar bleiben. Die Stühle, die Kern auf den Strassen von Kairo antrifft, sind Zeugen und Erinnerung gewordene Objekte, an die er sich mit seiner Kamera an nähert, als wären es zu porträtierende Menschen.

Thomas Kern, geboren 1965 in Brugg, Ausbildung zum Fotografen in Zürich. Ab 1989 als freier Reportagefotograf in Krisen gebieten unterwegs. 1990 Mitbegründer der Schweizer Fotoagentur Lookat Photos. 1998 – 2006 freischaffender Fotograf in San Francisco. 2006 und 2014 Auszeichnung mit einem Swiss Press Award. 2016 zeigte die Fotostiftung Schweiz in Winterthur seinen grossen Fotoessay über Haiti.
