Alexander and Bonin is pleased to announce a summer group exhibition featuring the works of ten artists. The exhibition will include paintings and sculptures by James Angell, Matthew Benedict, Carlos Bunga, Michael Buthe, Willie Cole, Víctor Grippo, Diango Hernández, Stefan Kürten, Jorge Macchi, and Sylvia Plimack Mangold.

Five new paintings by James Angell present geometrical abstract investigations in which planification and indeterminacy coexist. Paintings by Matthew Benedict explore historical subjects, combined with fiction and nostalgia. A recent, architecturally-scaled painting by Carlos Bunga brings to mind colorful urban interior walls. Made out of mass-produced materials, it also points to the precariousness and constantly evolving nature of urban structures. Several paintings from the late 1980s and early 1990s by Michael Buthe epitomize the artist’s signature tactile and fragmentary approach to the medium. Two new sculptures by Willie Cole make use of everyday materials to create anthropomorphic and iconic installations. Víctor Grippo‘s sculptural piece also presents anthropomorphized elements, in which a grouping of small, quasi-abstract figures suggests immateriality and aimlessness. Several new works by Diango Hernández develop the artist’s use of painterly waves to translate memories and texts. Stefan Kürten‘s painting presents the artist’s typography of modernist houses. Departing from the ordinary and coincidental, Jorge Macchi‘s paintings offer a disconcerting and contemplative experience. Sylvia Plimack Mangold‘s recent work reexamines a singular motif, the maple tree outside her home, to equally provide the viewer with a slowed-down visual experience.
