Caroline Achaintre – Shiftings

Caroline Achaintre (*1969, FR/DE) works with different media such as tapestry, drawing and ceramics, which she combines in a conceptual as well as process-based way. She transposes traditional techniques into the present, exploring the boundaries between the abstract and the representational. Her ceramics and watercolours, as well as the large-format tapestries, allow animalistic-looking figures and mask-like formations to appear and create a playful and absurd atmosphere. Caroline Achaintres first solo museum exhibition in Switzerland provides an insight into the memorable work of the German-French artist. It offers a glimpse of an artistic oeuvre that is characterised by precision, a pleasure in experimentation and unconventionality.

The exhibition title “Shiftings” alludes not only to the fact that Achaintre transfers traditional techniques such as tapestry or ceramics into the present, but also to her constant testing of the boundaries between abstraction and the figurative. Geometric, mask-like formations and wondrous, seemingly animalistic figures appear in her works, questioning our preconceived view and shifting classical classifications. The magic of Achaintres hybrid creatures is hidden in their ambiguity, their beauty lies in their irritation.

Achaintre develops her powerful tapestries with the technique of tufting, in which individual wool threads are shot through the canvas from behind with the help of a pressure gun. Due to the varying length of the threads and their elasticity, the soft fibres mix and form a relief-like surface on which lines and colours flow into each other. Form, line and material combine to create a pictorial experience in which the recognisability and blurriness of the contours are in an effective field of tension and give free rein to associations. Both the colour and the material captivate with their independence and have an effect in their very own substance. The works seem like mysterious relics of an unknown culture and unfold both a strong physical and sensual presence. Achaintres ceramics evoke associations with cell tissue, animal skins and masks, but also with human faces. Her intimate works on paper, on the other hand, are reminiscent of conundrums or the depth-psychological procedure of the Rorschach test. In many cases, various characters and multiple identities seem to populate her works.

Achaintres sources of inspiration are images from both high and popular culture. In addition to art-historical reference points, including German Expressionism, Primitivism and the Arts and Crafts movement, the horror, heavy metal and science fiction genres are just as important to her as the subversive spirit of Central European carnival and Shrovetide customs. The lively, colourful and humorous characterise Achaintres work as much as the archaic, dark and mysterious. On the border of the “uncanny” (Sigmund Freud), the strange can be discovered in the supposedly familiar; a tapestry becomes an animistic figure or wool becomes hair. Are they abstract forms or anthropomorphic beings? Are they patterns, rectangles and circles or pieces of clothing, fur, feathers, mouths and eyes? And finally: are we observing or being observed?

The exhibition is a cooperation with the Kunstmuseum Ravensburg, GER.

Caroline Achaintre (*1969, FR/DE) travaille avec différents médias tels que la tapisserie, le dessin et la céramique, qu’elle combine dans une approche à la fois conceptuelle et fondée sur les processus de création. Elle remet au goût du jour des techniques traditionnelles et explore les frontières entre l’abstrait et le figuratif. Ses céramiques et aquarelles, ainsi que ses tapisseries grand format laissent apparaître des figures à l’aspect animal et des formes aux traits figés, créant une atmosphère ludique et absurde. Cette première exposition personnelle de Caroline Achaintre dans une institution suisse donne un aperçu de l’œuvre percutante de l’artiste franco-allemande. Elle offre un éclairage sur une création artistique qui se distingue par sa précision, son goût de l’expérimentation et son anticonformisme.

Le titre de l’exposition “Shiftings” – en français déplacement, changement ou décalage – ne fait pas seulement allusion aux procédés d’Achaintre qui transpose des techniques traditionnelles telles que la tapisserie ou la céramique dans le monde contemporain, mais aussi à son exploration constante des limites entre l’abstraction et le figuratif. Dans ses créations émergent des formations géométriques, semblables à des masques, et des figures fantasques d’apparence animale, qui remettent en question notre regard préconçu en déplaçant les catégorisations classiques. La magie des créatures hybrides d’Achaintre se cache dans leur ambiguïté, leur beauté résidant dans leur caractère déconcertant.

Achaintre développe ses tapisseries imposantes en utilisant la technique du tuftage qui consiste à tirer des fils de laine l’un après l’autre sont tirés depuis l’arrière de la toile à l’aide d’un pistolet à pression. Grâce à la différence de longueur des fils et à leur élasticité, les fibres souples se mélangent et forment une surface en relief où les lignes et les couleurs s’assemblent. Formes, lignes et matières se combinent en une expérience visuelle dans laquelle la lisibilité et l’imprécision des contours créent un champ de tensions efficace qui laisse libre cours aux associations. Tant la couleur que le matériau séduisent par leur autonomie et agissent dans leur substance propre. Les œuvres ressemblent à des reliques mystérieuses d’une culture inconnue et développent une forte présence physique et sensorielle. Les céramiques d’Achaintre évoquent des associations de tissus cellulaires, de peaux d’animaux ou de masques et aussi de visages humains. Ses travaux intimes sur papier rappellent à leur tour des trompe-l’œil ou les méthodes psychanalytiques, comme le test de Rorschach. Souvent, plusieurs personnages, des identités multiples, semblent peupler les œuvres.

Les sources d’inspiration d’Achaintre proviennent des images de la haute culture et de la culture populaire. Outre les références à l’histoire de l’art, notamment à l’expressionnisme allemand, au primitivisme, ou au mouvement Arts and Crafts, les genres de l’horreur, du heavy metal et de la science-fiction sont tout aussi importants pour l’artiste que l’esprit subversif et les coutumes du carnaval d’Europe centrale. L’œuvre d’Achaintre se caractérise par son côté vivant, coloré et plein d’humour, mais aussi par son côté archaïque, sombre et mystérieux. À la limite de l’”Unheimliche” (Sigmund Freud), on peut découvrir de l’étrangeté dans ce que l’on croit être habituel; une tapisserie devient une figure animiste, la laine devient une chevelure. S’agit-il de formes abstraites ou d’êtres anthropomorphes? S’agit-il de motifs, de rectangles et de cercles ou de vêtements, de fourrure, de plumes, de bouches et d’yeux? Et enfin: regardons-nous ou sommes-nous observés?

Caroline Achaintre (*1969, FR/DE) arbeitet mit verschiedenen Medien wie Tapisserie, Zeichnung und Keramik, die sie in konzeptueller wie prozessbasierter Arbeitsweise kombiniert. Sie überführt traditionelle Techniken in die Gegenwart und erkundet dabei die Grenzen zwischen Abstraktion und Gegenständlichem. Ihre Keramiken und Aquarelle, sowie die grossformatigen Wandteppiche lassen animalisch wirkende Figuren und maskenhafte Formationen in Erscheinung treten und schaffen eine spielerische und absurde Atmosphäre. Die erste museale Einzelausstellung in der Schweiz von Caroline Achaintre gibt Einblick in das einprägsame Werk der deutsch-französischen Künstlerin. Sie bietet einen Blick auf ein künstlerisches Schaffen, das sich durch Präzision, Experimentierfreude und Unkonventionalität auszeichnet.

Der Ausstellungstitel “Shiftings” – dt. Verschiebungen, Verlagerungen, Umverteilungen – spielt nicht nur darauf an, dass Achaintre tradierte Techniken wie etwa die Tapisserie oder die Keramik in die Gegenwart überführt, sondern auch auf das ständige Ausloten der Grenzen zwischen Abstraktion und Gegenständlichem. In ihren Arbeiten treten geometrische, maskenhafte Formationen und wundersame, scheinbar animalische Figuren in Erscheinung, die unseren vorgeprägten Blick in Frage stellen und klassische Zuordnungen verschieben. Der Zauber von Achaintres hybriden Kreaturen verbirgt sich in ihrer Doppeldeutigkeit, ihre Schönheit liegt in ihrer Irritation.

Ihre kraftvollen Tapisserien entwickelt Achaintre mit der Technik des Tuftens, bei der einzelne Wollfäden mit Hilfe einer Druckpistole von hinten durch die Leinwand geschossen werden. Durch die differierende Länge der Fäden und deren Elastizität mischen sich die weichen Fasern und formen sich zu einer reliefartigen Fläche, auf der Linien und Farben ineinanderfliessen. Form, Linie und Material verbinden sich zu einem bildhaften Erlebnis, bei dem die Erkennbarkeit und die Unschärfe der Konturen in einem effektvollen Spannungsfeld stehen und Assoziationen freien Lauf lassen. Sowohl die Farbe wie auch das Material bestechen durch ihre Eigenständigkeit und wirken in ihrer ureigenen Substanz. Die Werke muten wie geheimnisvolle Relikte einer unbekannten Kultur an und entfalten sowohl eine starke physische wie auch sinnliche Präsenz. Achaintres Keramiken rufen Assoziationen zu Zellgeweben, Tierhäuten und Masken hervor, aber auch zu menschlichen Gesichtern. Ihre intimen Papierarbeiten erinnern wiederum an Vexierbilder oder an das tiefenpsychologische Verfahren des Rorschachtests. Meist sind es mehrere Charaktere, multiple Identitäten, die die einzelnen Arbeiten zu bevölkern scheinen.

Achaintres Inspirationsquellen sind Bilder sowohl aus der Hoch-, als auch aus der Popkultur. Neben kunsthistorischen Bezugspunkten u. a. zum deutschen Expressionismus, Primitivismus und zur Arts-and-Crafts-Bewegung ist das Horror-, Heavy Metal- und Science- Fiction-Genre für sie ebenso von Bedeutung wie der subversive Geist mitteleuropäischer Karnevals- und Fastnachtsbräuche. Das Lebendige, Farbmächtige und Humorvolle kennzeichnet Achaintres Werk ebenso wie das Archaische, Dunkle und Geheimnisvolle. An der Grenze zum “Unheimlichen” (Sigmund Freud) lässt sich in vermeintlich Gewohntem Fremdartiges entdecken; ein Wandteppich wird zur animistischen Gestalt oder Wolle zum Haar. Handelt es sich um abstrakte Formen oder um anthropomorphe Wesen? Sind es Muster, Rechtecke und Kreise oder Kleidungsstücke, Fell, Federkleid, Münder und Augen? Und schliesslich: betrachten wir oder werden wir beobachtet?
